  • Diary of a CEO

No one is talking about declining birth rates. Everyone is talking about SB suggesting an intervention to get incels laid so they can pass on their surnames. But sure, Sensemaker, miss the whole point again.

  • Too short

Hi, love the show but feel you always break it off when it gets interesting. Does it have to be so short?

  • I don’t like The Observer.

I don’t like the Observer. All those boring privileged columnists moaning about how lucky they are. I stopped listening to the Guardian podcast a few years ago. I really liked Tortoise. It felt like a fresh take and it looked at things differently. I understand the Observer was a loss but I wish it hadn’t come to Tortoise.

  • Too much advertising too short a content

Im a huge Tortoise fan and listen to everything they produce. But there’s no point in promoting Sensemaker as a less than 10-min curated news content when the content itself represents the smallest portion of the podcast. This is really annoying and frankly misleading fr your listeners.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Why is Ghana criminalising LGBTQ+ people?
Q: So why is this happening?
The guest outlines a mix of colonial legacies, contemporary overseas influences (including US-based Christian rights groups), and political incentives tied to elections and religious voting blocs, which together drive the push for harsher anti-LGBTQ laws across several African countries.
Will the UK rejoin the EU?
Q: Are you in favour of rejoining the European Union?
The guest/subject answer indicates a long-term feasibility with caveats, suggesting focus on domestic issues now but acknowledging a potential case for rejoining in the long term.
How could the government tackle antisemitism?
Q: So how has the government responded to this wave of antisemitic violence?
The host introduces the topic and the guest explains that funding announcements have occurred, but there is concern that the funds may not fully address the problem, signaling a need for broader, multi-faceted approaches including security, education, and enforcement.
Will the government’s plan to stop young people smoking work?
Q: What benefit is this going to do for young people now, rather than over the course of the coming decades?
The policy is expected to reduce youth initiation and smoking prevalence, with evidence from age restrictions and international experiences suggesting fewer young people will start smoking, while also considering the broader health and productivity gains over time.
Why your hayfever is getting worse
Q: Why is hay fever getting worse now?
Rising temperatures, higher carbon dioxide levels, and increasing air pollutants are extending pollen seasons and boosting pollen production, leading to more widespread and severe symptoms.
