  • I’m Done

I’ve listened to this podcast for about a year, I would say. Enjoyed some of the insights and the knowledge of science fiction literature was a helpful guide on what past and current works to read in the genre. That’s not the problem…

I plan on unfollowing this podcast after I write this review because I just cannot stand the way the host Luke Barrage talks to his co-host, Juliene. I think they are a couple, if that’s the case, my heart breaks for her.

  • Man talks over woman

The content can be interesting, but it is SO distracting that the male presenter just steamrolls over his partner as soon as she starts to say anything. Hilariously in the latest episode he goes on about a character in a book mansplaining - no self awareness whatsoever. Shame.

  • One guy rambling for 1 hour and a half, repeating the same ideas over and over and being quite wrong about everything... But mostly, it's one guy interrupting his cohost for 1 hour and a half even after she says "please, let me talk"... It was painful to listen.

Ps: his answer was "let me finish this idea first" and went on to repeat the same ideas for the rest of the podcast.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

SFBRP #553 – Robert A Heinlein – Starship Troopers
Q: How do you know that Heinlein or this story of war equals good and the way that this is all written out, that that is not satirical?
It's not that it's not satirical, but this book makes foundational assumptions about the setup of the world, which if hold true lead to these conclusions.
SFBRP #554 – Arkady and Boris Strugatsky – Roadside Picnic
Q: Do you know why the two brothers, the two Russian brothers in the Soviet Union made a decision to write a book that takes place in America?
The authors aimed to bypass censorship by setting their story in America, allowing themselves creative freedom to explore themes without direct criticism of Soviet society.
SFBRP #530 – Sandra Newman – Julia – 1984
Q: Do you think I'm going to rate this highly or lowly?
This is like... I'm not actually that sure anymore, but I think you're going to rate it like, I don't know, four stars or something.
SFBRP #537 – Andrew Krivak – The Bear
Q: Was the language also like this strange, autistic black knight? That's just kept in my head, how can a knight be autistic?
The language is written more about, it's more like based in like, yeah, kind of like folk tales, fairy tales, that kind of stuff, which is very different from the, I'm going to write like, you know, Hemingway and whatever.
SFBRP #537 – Andrew Krivak – The Bear
Q: Did you finish this one?
Yes, I did finish this one.
