Story seemed well done; I was aware of the “factory,” “data brokers,” and difficultly/impossibility of escaping the compounds, plus the fact that so much information about each of us is all over the web (did DOGE make it worse?). I did not know that recruitment was such a big thing. Thanks to the Filipino colonel for helping Filipinos escape—that did surprise as I am quite knowledgeable about that culture. Why are people like Charlie not apprehended by their home countries?
Yes, Charlie was able to get them out but did the brothers/ victims forget SHE put them in there?! She knew where she was sending them but still chose money over them.
There is something else behind the scenes that suddenly made her ‘care’ about them.
Enjoyed the podcast thoroughly and expected the comments to reflect that? Instead they’re lambasting the story and host for having empathy and recognizing duality… The story is gripping, and as both a victim and a perpetrator, Charlie is a very interesting perspective to focus on. Solid journalism and storytelling in my opinion, Wondery never disappoints
A really interesting peek behind the curtain of how these scams are operated, but mother of god the presenter is dreadful.
This story is so very sad for everyone, but Charlie is no victim. The host has potential for podcasting which is why it got 2 stars even I canceled after 3 episodes.
