Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Conversation with Matt Sperling
Q: If you could change one thing about the current CDH environment, what would it be?
I'd aim to reduce the ability to discuss draws or concedes in casual play by shifting conversations toward natural incentives—so that players focus on finishing games rather than steering outcomes through talk, with judges enforcing slow play and delinking discussion from actual game actions.
Conversation with Matt Sperling
Q: What are your hot takes on underplayed cards or decks right now in CDH?
I'm not convinced about a single dominant underplayed card, but I'm watching cards like Dream Harvest and others that offer heavy impact without the classic draw-heavy weakness. I also talked about how Peer, Atali-like effects, and other big-mana strategies could influence the format as their cards mature, with the caveat that real-world play and ban decisions will shape their viability.
Conversation with Matt Sperling
Q: So Matt, having weighed in on that, what do you think about the new draw-incentive changes?
I think the incentive changes are in the right place because incentives matter; it's an experiment rather than a rules-committee decree, and it makes people think more about whether to draw or push for a win. There are concerns about how it affects king-making and the overall flow of matches, but the idea is to move away from frequent draws by making win values more clearly reflected in standings.

Frequently Asked Questions About Sam's Table

What is Sam's Table about and what kind of topics does it cover?

A deep-dish of strategy and culture in high-level paper Magic formats, with a steady focus on cEDH (competitive EDH), deck building, and meta-tuning. Episodes blend technical analysis of combo potential, card interactions, and format-specific nuances with personal anecdotes about events, community building, and format evolution. A recurring strength is the host's clear, opinionated breakdowns of how to maximize efficiency and consistency, whether tuning RogRakh Thrasios, exploring Terra Reanimator, or chatting about Old School and Premodern variants. Notable is the emphasis on community, experimentation, and practical deck-building tactics that listeners can apply to their own games, tournaments, or content creation.
