  • Great updates but pls drop the gimmick!

Love this informative podcast for planning updates, but the gimmicky chat and sound effects around ‘entering room 106’ makes me cringe every time - it’s not dynamic, doesn’t add anything!

  • Planning Explained

Thanks to this podcast I finally have a context in which planning decisions in my area are made, for better or worse. I am not a planning person. I have an amateur, concerned-member-of-the-public interest in the subject. Whenever I listen to this podcast I learn something that I can apply in my everyday experience of my local area. Thank you! Also, the presenters have learned, pretty well, how to broadcast, having presumably come from a writing background. Very little umming and awwing . Well ... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Ep208: The implications of the scaling back of planning committee decision-making
Q: OK, and given these risks and challenges that you've outlined, have any councils that were hoping to meet the end of year deadline actually changed their minds and decided to produce a plan under the new system instead?
Yes, by spring several of the 50 busiest authorities had already switched from a legacy plan to the new system, roughly around 10 percent.
Ep208: The implications of the scaling back of planning committee decision-making
Q: Yes. So this is the first mandatory gateway point when councils have to show that they're ready to start the formal 30 month local plan preparation process.
Sam explains that the gateway self-assessment is the initial checkpoint that councils must complete to demonstrate readiness, with the Planning Inspectorate not involved at this stage and the council responsible for self-assessment.
Lord Heseltine: "You’re just playing in toy town”
Q: Would you be able to share with our listeners your recollection of, I suppose, the politics of Europe at the time, and the reasons why you and others decided that Europe needed its own space agency?
The guest describes a pivotal moment when European allies weighed national budgets against the need for a unified approach to space, arguing that a pan-European framework was essential to access scale, align national interests, and keep Europe technologically competitive with larger powers, which eventually led to the creation of the European Space Agency.
Ep203: How far the government has got in recruiting its 1,400 promised new planners
Q: What risks or concerns are raised about the changes to apprenticeship funding and mid-career recruitment?
Cutting level seven apprenticeship funding could reduce mid-to-senior level recruitment by discouraging new entrants, potentially offsetting gains from pathways and public practice.
Ep203: How far the government has got in recruiting its 1,400 promised new planners
Q: What mechanisms are officially expanding to meet the target, and is there alignment with the promised figure?
Expansion of Pathways for Planning and Public Practice, plus salary support, are intended to create and fill posts, but the full 1,400 target relies on broader measures and remains uncertain.
