  • Really gets into the meat of specific ideas rather than just introducing topics. A standout.

This is one of my favorite podcasts I’ve ever listened to. The interviewees are often people who explain their ideas for a living, so they can talk about even quite complicated things in very clear, understandable ways. Instead of simplifying ideas, they clarify their communication. The interviewer also has a background in philosophy and it shows.

  • Loud ads

I enjoy your interviews but Please sound level your ads. They are much louder than the content which is so jarring. I like to listen to this at bedtime but I will no longer until these ads are sound leveled

  • End of a great podcast

This used to be a great physics and math podcast. Now it is either all political nonsense or about aliens and AI conspiracy theories.

  • Intellectual heroin!

I discovered this podcast while looking for AI information from outside the usual (albeit valuable) tech silo. I’ve been delighted to find the discussions here so deep and wide-ranging. Excellent interviews.

I rank this alongside Sean Carroll’s Mindscape and the better Lex Friedman stuff. I play new episodes as fast as they drop, and am gleefully working through the back catalog.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

271 - Sara Imari Walker & Lee Cronin: Quantum Physics, Time, and the Origin of Life
Q: What motivates you to pursue philosophy as a foundation for scientific inquiry, and how does it shape your approach to experiments?
Philosophy helps uncover and challenge the underlying assumptions of scientific theories, forcing us to articulate the axioms and to test whether the theories endure under scrutiny. It also cultivates a culture of humility and openness to being wrong, which is essential for progress in any field that deals with complex, evolving systems.
271 - Sara Imari Walker & Lee Cronin: Quantum Physics, Time, and the Origin of Life
Q: Why do you think explaining life and its origins requires crossing multiple disciplines, rather than staying within one field?
Because the problem sits at the intersection of chemistry, physics, biology, and philosophy; each field frames questions differently and holds pieces of the history of how we came to understand those questions. Cross-disciplinary collaboration reveals how fundamental regularities emerge, and helps build a coherent framework that can be experimentally tested.
269 - Scott Aaronson: What Is Quantum Computing?
Q: How would you introduce quantum computing to listeners who have only heard the name conceptually?
Quantum computing entails a unique way of computation that is tied to the laws of quantum mechanics, which suggests that the way we calculate probabilities differs from classical methods.
269 - Scott Aaronson: What Is Quantum Computing?
Q: What originally drew you to quantum computing as a research area?
I first heard about quantum computing when I was a teenager and was initially skeptical, thinking it sounded like garbage. But after spending time learning about it, I was amazed at its foundation in linear algebra.
268 - Jeffrey Pfeffer: Power, Influence, and the Psychology of Institutions
Q: What are the implications of self-interest in organizations?
Self-interest often dictates that individuals may not adopt better methods if it doesn't align with their immediate interests.
