  • Ads ruin this podcast

Advertisements ruin this otherwise excellent podcast. Too bad Robinson won't put the ads at rhe beginning of the show like Lex Fridman, Matt Beall and others do. It's unlistenable in its current form.

  • Robinson has very interesting guests

This is one of my favourite podcasts and Robinson is a generous host BUT that constant uplift in his voice on every sentence is very hard to listen to. Sounds a bit Valley Girls. 🙁

Robinson please check the audio levels before publishing. The ads are so loud and sudden when I have my airpods in they nearly give me a heart attack

  • Has crackpots on with no pushback

He has Richard Wolfe on and repeatedly misses opportunities to push back on lie after lie. For example, he said that millions of Palestinians have been killed. Also Wolfe seems to have no understanding of the dynamics in the region between the gulf states and Iran. He says that America is no longer a superpower. America has destroyed Iran in weeks, meanwhile after years of war, Russia can barely put a dent in a country next door. Regardless if this war is a good idea, America can still project p... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

279 - Paul Davies: The Second Quantum Mechanics Revolution
Q: What is Quantum 2.0, and how does it differ from the first quantum revolution?
Quantum 2.0 is not a replacement; it's a reframing. It keeps quantum mechanics as the underlying theory but emphasizes encoding information in the quantum degrees of freedom of individual particles, uses entanglement as a resource, and highlights the exponential computational potential, especially when linked to sensing and navigation applications.
275 - Nate Soares: AI Will Kill Us All If We Don’t Change Course
Q: What level of sophistication does an AI need to develop goal-directed behavior and alignment failures?
Even modestly capable AIs can exhibit goal-directed behaviors if trained to optimize certain objectives, and as AIs get smarter and capable of self-improvement or building other AIs, these behaviors can become more pronounced and harder to align.
275 - Nate Soares: AI Will Kill Us All If We Don’t Change Course
Q: Are you limiting your claim to large language models or include other AI technologies as well?
The concern is not limited to large language models; the underlying patterns of training and data, and the emergent behaviors, could arise in other advanced AI systems as well, so the risk framework applies more broadly than just LLMs.
271 - Sara Imari Walker & Lee Cronin: Quantum Physics, Time, and the Origin of Life
Q: What motivates you to pursue philosophy as a foundation for scientific inquiry, and how does it shape your approach to experiments?
Philosophy helps uncover and challenge the underlying assumptions of scientific theories, forcing us to articulate the axioms and to test whether the theories endure under scrutiny. It also cultivates a culture of humility and openness to being wrong, which is essential for progress in any field that deals with complex, evolving systems.
271 - Sara Imari Walker & Lee Cronin: Quantum Physics, Time, and the Origin of Life
Q: Why do you think explaining life and its origins requires crossing multiple disciplines, rather than staying within one field?
Because the problem sits at the intersection of chemistry, physics, biology, and philosophy; each field frames questions differently and holds pieces of the history of how we came to understand those questions. Cross-disciplinary collaboration reveals how fundamental regularities emerge, and helps build a coherent framework that can be experimentally tested.
