  • Is the show about science?

Because it seems to be more about politics and religion than actual astronomy. Also the last episode crying about Joe Rogan not believing in the moon landing made me start actually doubting NASA which is ironic since that was the opposite of what Keating intended.

  • So this guy just critiqued another guy and his argument was that some kinds of slavery are fine. Or perhaps he's referring to indentured servitude. Either way I'm not sure I would release a podcast explaining that is how you feel- you might want to keep that shit to yourself. If he has someone who cleans his house or a nanny or something, i hope they hear this podcast. His pompous delivery should suffice to let us know he thinks himself superior, no need to illustrate this by defending servitude... more

Talking Points

Joscha Bach: The Self Is a Story Your Brain Tells Itself
Q: If someone is watching this, smart 18-year-old, thinking about next steps, what do you tell them and what's the one book that's essential for them to achieve that goal?
There isn't one book; read thousands and stay curiosity-driven. Seek projects you care about, start small, and focus on choosing environments and people that inspire you, because networks matter as much as knowledge.
The Equation That Changed How Physicists Think About Reality | Juan Maldacena
Q: What is ADS-CFT and how did you come upon it? Give us the origin story.
ADSCFT is the connection between anti-de Sitter space time and conformal field theories on its boundary, providing a concrete example of holography where gravity in a bulk spacetime corresponds to a quantum field theory at the boundary; Maldacena describes how the idea emerged from attempts to understand strong coupling in quantum field theories and gravity as a dual description.
The Equation That Changed How Physicists Think About Reality | Juan Maldacena
Q: Could you explain the holographic principle first, and how it generalizes to real universes versus idealized models like AdS space?
The holographic principle posits that a quantum gravity description in a region can be encoded on its boundary via a lower-dimensional quantum field theory; while AdS/CFT provides a concrete realization, real cosmologies like our universe are more subtle, and researchers seek a dictionary that connects boundary theories to interior physics in more realistic settings.
The Equation That Changed How Physicists Think About Reality | Juan Maldacena
Q: What would you tell Einstein if you could have ten minutes with him about learning from him and what you would explain to him about modern physics?
Maldacena explains that black hole physics, quantum information, and the holographic principle offer a framework showing how spacetime and gravity emerge from quantum theory, suggesting a deep dialogue between general relativity and quantum mechanics, and pointing toward a future where cosmology and quantum gravity are tightly intertwined.
Princeton Scientist: We Don't Understand AI - Tom Griffiths - #553
Q: What is your working definition of artificial general intelligence (AGI)?
Griffiths cautions against thinking of AGI on a single one-dimensional scale and suggests viewing human minds and AI as different systems that solve related computational problems under different constraints, with progress depending on how well these systems tackle a range of computational challenges rather than matching human intelligence in every domain.
