A Queer History of Fashion Dolls
Q: How does, how do you get interested in this as a topic of academic inquiry and discussion, historical discussion?
My interest grew from a personal history of playing with dolls in secret due to a toxic masculine environment, which later transformed into a scholarly pursuit as I became a collector and researcher, aiming to share these histories with a broader audience.
A Queer History of Fashion Dolls
Q: Fashion dolls, I refer to fashion dolls in my introduction. How is a fashion doll different, compare and contrast please to a non-fashion doll?
A fashion doll is specifically designed to be dressed and undressed, unlike generic dolls; examples include Barbie and Cindy, and I focus on those that exist within queer fashion contexts, which helps reveal how clothing and presentation are central to their cultural meaning.
Humans prefer to walk counterclockwise but we don't know why
Q: What are the practical implications of your findings for real-world spaces like supermarkets or museums?
While the results don't yet translate to changing crowd management rules in dense crowds, they suggest considering leftward walking bias when designing entrances or corridors to improve walking comfort and potentially reduce congestion, with region-specific considerations.
Humans prefer to walk counterclockwise but we don't know why
Q: How did you come to investigate this topic in the first place?
The research began as a serendipitous outcome during COVID-era experiments where groups walked inside a closed arena to maintain interpersonal distance, and the anticlockwise rotation emerged as a consistent pattern across many trials.
The Weird Horror Film Festival is back
Q: Is the festival sold out?
Yes, the main festival is sold out, but there are still afterparties and related events available for attendees.
