  • Lacks better insights and data

High level, basic talk on topics. Often bring speakers that have little data to support claims. Far from SMEs.

  • Thank you

This show has been very informative and interesting. I love the style with which the host welcomes listeners to delve deeper into various economic subjects with correspondents and experts. (Also, in my opinion, the recent episode relating to European defense spending was just the right length.)

  • Long form vs Short form

In answer to the question … longer versions of Econ World or not: Please provide both (as required). The deep dives are well worth the time spent and the shorter versions work too. This is not an “or” decision, it is an “and” opportunity. Thanks for all this deep and valuable information. It is difficult to find information that one can trust … Reuters is a place where I “feel safe”.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Inside Europe’s shortest workweek
Q: First, are workers more productive when they work fewer hours? Is that reflected in the numbers?
Productivity per hour is high in the Netherlands, but it's not clear that fewer hours automatically mean higher productivity; GDP per hour worked remains strong, and many households maintain high living standards through high productivity.
Kevin Warsh’s policy trap
Q: Could you just sketch Warsh's proposed policy regime quick for listeners?
Warsh would like to shrink the balance sheet, lower interest rates, and reduce policy maker chatter to create a clearer, less opinionated path for the Fed, harking back to a pre-crisis operating regime with a smaller balance sheet and more decisive rate actions.
Safe havens
Q: Quiz time. Up until recently, gold has been one of the best performing assets on financial markets. Which US institution holds the world's biggest known pile of gold?
The Federal Reserve Bank of New York
The economics of $60-plus cigarettes
Q: Has Australia's cigarette tax overshot, and what would be the impact of reducing the excise tax on smoking rates?
If the goal is harm reduction, the tax may have overshot; reducing it could lower prices and potentially increase smoking rates if illicit competition remains strong, though a partial cut paired with enforcement could recover some revenue and reduce illicit incentives.
The economics of $60-plus cigarettes
Q: As an economist, what do you think of using tax to discourage harmful behaviours or negative externalities?
Taxes can internalize negative externalities and influence demand through price signals, but the effectiveness depends on the broader policy mix, including enforcement and the existence of strong illicit alternatives; in Australia, raising the price reduced legal consumption but also expanded illicit trade, so any tax change must be paired with robust enforcement.
