Everyone Loves Someone Who Had an Abortion: Abortion Storytellers Part 3
Q: Okay, so would you like to share your story and start wherever you feel comfortable starting your story?
Yes. I begin by describing the stigma I faced growing up in a religious environment, the pressure to bear children, and how that shaped my initial avoidance of sex. The decision to terminate my pregnancy came from a place of autonomy and recognizing I was not ready to become a parent, despite external shame. The years after the abortion were emotionally heavy due to lack of support and ongoing stigma, but over time I found resources and communities—like Exhale and We Testify—that helped me reframe my experience and begin healing. Now, five years later, I'm more open about my abortion, use my voice to support others, and have found a path in reproductive justice work, including becoming an abortion dualist and advocating for access and education.

Q: What has Iceland done with parental leave, and how has it evolved?
Iceland established a framework in 2000 that allocated a share of leave to the father and introduced a cap in later reforms, evolving to twelve months total with a six-month share to each parent, plus a six-week use-it-or-lose-it period, to promote equal parenting.

Q: Where does the US rank in the Global Gender Gap index, and what does that imply for policy learning?
The US ranks in the lower half (around the 40s), illustrating how policy design and cultural context influence gender equality outcomes and the need to adapt lessons from Iceland carefully.
