  • Learning so much!

Dr Max G is a fantastic interviewer. He lets his expert guests speak. He listens as they tell their science and their story, then Max sums it all up nicely for us. The guests are all interesting and I never thought I’d be listening to a podcast about breeding cattle in Botswana but there I was and I loved it. The science around infrared is new to me and many of the guests are intelligent, thoughtful scientists who delve into this interaction between photons, infrared and our biology. It’s eye op... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Light as a Nutrient: Sunlight, Circadian Rhythm & Metabolic Health | Dr. Max Gulhane on The Signal Podcast
Q: How does UV light influence hunger and metabolism?
Ultraviolet light activates POMC pathways, which can suppress hunger signals at certain times, linking sun exposure to appetite regulation through melanocortin signaling.
Light as a Nutrient: Sunlight, Circadian Rhythm & Metabolic Health | Dr. Max Gulhane on The Signal Podcast
Q: What is light in the context of biology beyond everyday visibility?
Light is described as a nutrient, energy, and information that informs time of day, season, and environmental context, directly influencing mitochondrial function and cellular processes.
103. Photoimmunology, Circadian Biology & The Hidden Effects of Light | Dr Alexander Wunsch
Q: What is the core takeaway about the role of light in immune function compared to traditional views of sunlight as simply beneficial or harmful?
Light acts as a modulator of the immune system, with outcomes highly dependent on prior physiological status and the balance between humoral and cellular immune responses, rather than a simple on/off effect. The implication is to tailor exposure timing and spectrum to individual needs.
Sunlight, Vitamin D in Pregnancy and Health | Dr Max on Great Birth Rebellion Podcast
Q: How much sunlight is enough for vitamin D during pregnancy?
Aim for short, regular exposure based on skin type and latitude, with whole-body exposure enough to generate vitamin D without burning, and supplement if needed to reach optimal levels (>75 nmol/L as a common target, noting higher thresholds in some specialties).
102. Dr Alexander Wunsch: Evolutionary Role of UV Light in Health
Q: Can you give us an overview of how you think about photoendocrinology, especially central vs. cutaneous pathways?
He explains two brain glands regulate autonomic activity and that light-driven hormonal responses occur both centrally and in the skin, with shared endocrine pathways that can adapt to environmental light while also needing to be balanced to avoid overstimulation or insufficient activation.
