  • Please stop talking about Atmos

Amazing show. Great resource for learning and hearing different techniques. Lij, please: lay off the Atmos content. Your audience has a range of folks, I know. But for us home studio folks, Atmos is impractical (and boring).

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

RSR557 - Teresa Knox - Reviving Leon Russell’s Church Studio & the Tulsa Sound
Q: What single piece of advice would you give your younger self about building a studio and a legacy like The Church Studio?
Identify your end goal immediately and stay focused on that mission, avoiding distractions from external opinions and sunk costs, while remaining open enough to pivot when necessary.
RSR556 – Steve Genewick – The Majesty of Turning Spinal Tap Up to Eleven in Atmos
Q: What was the process for archiving and organizing the huge multi-tracks for a film score?
The crew stripe-recorded everything, documented with track sheets, and relied on a dedicated Pro Tools operator to label and manage files, with the engineer focusing on balance and the director/conductor providing notes for takes.
RSR556 – Steve Genewick – The Majesty of Turning Spinal Tap Up to Eleven in Atmos
Q: How did you approach monitoring and headphone mixes in a large orchestral session?
Headphone mixes were typically mono or simple, with a conductor and musicians receiving targeted feeds; the goal was to keep the musicians hearing a balanced, consistent monitor while the control room engineer managed the broader mix and cues.
RSR556 – Steve Genewick – The Majesty of Turning Spinal Tap Up to Eleven in Atmos
Q: What was it like recording all three of those guys on their vocals?
The vocal sessions were tracked live with the three actors in the room, often recording multiple takes and then choosing the best performances, with occasional overdubs or alternative vocal takes when needed.
RSR555 - Matt Boudreau - From Stereo to Atmos: Revolutionizing Audio Mixing
Q: What is the key advice Matt would give to a younger version of himself about archiving and file management?
If it doesn't exist in three places, it doesn't exist. Use the 3-2-1 rule (three copies, two readily accessible, one remote), and plan for disaster to ensure future recall and the ability to revisit past work.
