Hey Mike! Some people listen to music in the car on the way to work. Instead, I listen to your podcast on the way to my studio every day! Listening to MYM before I start my day fills me with inspiration, excitement, and validation on what I sometimes feel unsure about as a full time producer. Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Monte Vallier: Being Creative as a Differentiator
Q: What's your process for starting a mix and determining its direction?
He describes loading stems into Pro Tools, muting and soloing to identify key elements, and deciding which layers to keep or consolidate, then building the mix around the core elements and evolving it through experimentation.
Monte Vallier: Being Creative as a Differentiator
Q: How do you approach differentiating yourself from AI in your work?
He argues for human-driven decisions, the value of mistakes, and creating moments that feel unique and human rather than algorithmically produced, with an emphasis on texture and emotion.
Monte Vallier: Being Creative as a Differentiator
Q: How did you get into the side of commercial audio and what did that look like early on?
Vallier explains starting with bands and interning at studios, which led to building a private studio and gradually doing commercial work for large brands through connections with agencies, emphasizing reputation and reliability.
Barrett Jones: Getting Mix-Ready Sounds During Tracking
Q: How do you balance fuzz, distortion, and articulation to keep guitars musical in a mix?
The balance comes from understanding the guitar's pickups, play style, and the amp settings; he notes that pedals contribute a lot of fuzziness, while careful attention to the gain structure and keeping some headroom helps maintain articulation and punch without losing definition.
Barrett Jones: Getting Mix-Ready Sounds During Tracking
Q: What does your typical process look like when it comes to recording guitars?
Jones explains sticking with a simple but effective signal chain (often a preferred 57 microphone) and focusing on getting the feel and tone upfront, with limited EQ and controlled processing depending on whether the guitar is clean or distorted, to preserve dynamics and ride the tonal decisions into the mix.
