  • Old guard

James Carville and Karl Rove. Both well past it, but I don’t remember Rove delivering so many lies in the bad old days. Maybe the corrosive effects of Trump hit everyone. enjoyed the show.

  • Affable and intelligent

I don’t agree very often with these guys but I do appreciate their informed takes and that they skirt the hellish echo chambers by moving beyond the obvious and diminishing the emotional bs that passes for opinion news these days. Well done!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The Senate Stalls Vacation Time
Q: What are the main legislative obstacles to passing the Save America Act this year?
The main obstacles are party-line opposition, the filibuster in the Senate, and the time-pressured agenda that limits what can be enacted through reconciliation, with some Republicans wary of lowering the threshold or linking the bill to broader policy changes.
Today's Primaries in Five States
Q: So this National Assessment of Educational Progress is out. How real is the Mississippi miracle, and what practices are driving it?
The Mississippi gains are attributed to a persistent, focused use of science of reading, early-grade instruction, and a robust accountability mechanism (third-grade reading tests for promotion) along with strategic state-level funding and teacher support to implement these practices.
House Vote to Ban Stock Trading by Members of Congress
Q: Spencer, what does the generic congressional ballot mean and why does it matter for the midterms?
The generic ballot tracks voter preferences on a national level and helps gauge the overall direction for the House and potentially the Senate; a sizable lead for Democrats suggests more seats in play and potential shifts in the congressional map.
2 More Die in ICE-Involved Shootings
Q: Carl, what do you think about the Florida ICE incident in terms of responsibility and policy?
Carl advocates for a nuanced view, noting that while enforcement of the law is important, the tragic outcomes show a need for careful consideration of how arrests are conducted and the potential consequences of chasing individuals into dangerous situations.
The Media's Framing of Socialism.
Q: Steve, what is the Overclass and why do you think this elite structure matters for American politics?
The Overclass is a modern elite that manages through universities, media, government, and corporations, and it has effectively overridden constitutional checks; understanding its influence helps explain why culture and policy look the way they do, and why a center-focused, reform-minded approach is needed.
