  • Pronatalism

One of the worst cases of strawman arguments I’ve ever heard…..and I’m a Rothbard fan.

  • Ryan laughs too much

It's a good podcast, but the hosts don't seem very professional. Ryan goes "heh heh" way too often. If it were a personal podcast that would be fine (though still annoying), but if you're representing an organization (such as the Mises Institute), you should try to speak more professionally.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

"Classical" Liberalism and Libertarianism
Q: Why does the traditional emphasis on constitutions and elections fail to secure liberty, according to your discussion?
Constitutions and elections are means to an end, not ends in themselves; the end is the protection of individual liberty, which requires decentralization and countervailing power among intermediating institutions rather than a centralized state.
"Classical" Liberalism and Libertarianism
Q: What terminology do you use when teaching, and what should people keep in mind about these terms?
The key is to focus on liberalism as the idea that social and economic life should be free from state intervention, and then to distinguish classical liberalism as the historical form that resisted state power, while recognizing that contemporaries often misapply the term to mean social democracy.
A Libertarian Theory of Parental Obligations
Q: Is there any way to sever parental obligations in cases like adoption or surrogacy, according to this theory?
The guest argues that you cannot fully sever obligations; adoption can transfer duties through delegation, but even then there are liabilities and a continuing responsibility if the child is harmed, implying obligations persist even with pragmatic adoption arrangements.
A Libertarian Theory of Parental Obligations
Q: Can you introduce us to the thinking about parental obligations among libertarian scholars who are calling it libertarian views of parenting?
Desyllas explains that several traditional libertarian views—such as ownership of children or social contracts—are problematic, and he presents an approach that recognizes positive parental obligations arising from the creation of a child, anchored in the idea of preventing foreseeable peril and guiding the child to self-sufficiency.
The Declaration of Independence Created 13 New Sovereign Countries
Q: How was the thinking different about the United States as this one single nation?
It was recognized that before the Civil War, people referred to the United States as a plural entity, indicating an understanding of diversity among states.
