Excellent show, brought back lots of happy nostalgia for Richthofen War, and Ace of Aces. Thanks for the lead on Eagles in the Sky. I appreciate your efforts to inform and entertain old war gamers like me.

  • Fun little hobby podcast

Pushing Cardboard is a fun, low key podcast to listen to Grant talk about what he’s playing, and his likes and dislikes. Not as in depth as some, and the time investment doesn’t seem overly long. I really appreciate that the shows stay focused, and don’t fall into long sections of rambling and bro talk.

  • On target with his preferences & format

Podcast host Grant plays larger/longer wargames than I do, but in other ways we’ve got much in common. His love for cardboard & hexmaps comes through, and so does his prolific PBEMing via Vassal. Shows are to-the-point, which everyone can appreciate.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

53 - John and Mark Kwasny | Traces of Victory
Q: What makes your approach to the French and Indian War different from existing games?
They aimed to simplify and speed up play by removing excessive components and using a compact map with an innovative card-and-plot system that keeps the feel of the period without bogging players down.
53 - John and Mark Kwasny | Traces of Victory
Q: How did you come to publish with FormSquare, and what drew you to the publisher?
They explored multiple publishers, found FormSquare via submissions, and appreciated the publisher's straightforward approach and active crowdfunding strategy, which aligned with their goals for a modern, accessible design.
53 - Carl Paradis, Battle Commander, and a look at Ju 87 Stuka Ace
Q: What inspired the Battle Commander design and how does it relate to Absolute War?
Paradis explains that Battle Commander is a diceless, grand tactical system that inherits the granularity and card-driven elements from Absolute War, but adapts them into a Napoleonic framework with a unified rulebook and evolving volumes.
52 - Francisco Ronco and Bellica 3G, Revolution's Shiloh: The First Day
Q: How do you balance historical accuracy with enjoyable gameplay in your games?
I design models first, not perfect representations of history, and then use those models to teach players how history unfolds. By cross-referencing sources, using multiple scenarios, and emphasizing operational decisions, we can present a historically grounded experience that remains playable and engaging, even when showing different perspectives or lesser-known conflicts.
52 - Francisco Ronco and Bellica 3G, Revolution's Shiloh: The First Day
Q: Can you describe the core design philosophy behind your Campaign Commander system?
The system is deliberately light in rules, with a modular structure that uses a three-part framework (exclusive rules, combat sheets, and a flexible event deck) to cover different fronts and eras. It aims to be highly replayable, with three main components—supply, command, and uncertainty—driving player decisions, while keeping playtime reasonable through a three-hour cap for many titles.
