  • Episodes could be tighter

Love this podcast overall. Episodes are all over the place, more rambling, more non sequiturs lately vs the early years. Having a clearer outline of the conversation would be huge. Jim and Devin episodes are significantly better than when other people do the show.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Private Equity is Coming For Your 401(k) (w/ PitchBook's Nizar Tarhuni)
Q: Is retail access to private markets a net positive or negative for the industry?
It brings more capital into private markets and can democratize opportunities, but requires careful design to avoid mispricing, liquidity mismatches, and punitive fee structures; the heavy lifting around transparency and infrastructure will determine overall impact.
Private Equity is Coming For Your 401(k) (w/ PitchBook's Nizar Tarhuni)
Q: What role does transparency and third-party benchmarking play in making retail participation feasible?
Independent benchmarking and third-party data (benchmarks, ratings, Lumonic portfolio monitoring) are crucial to provide objective visibility into performance and risk, enabling advisors and regulators to assess value and transparency before retail money flows in.
Private Equity is Coming For Your 401(k) (w/ PitchBook's Nizar Tarhuni)
Q: What are semi-liquid and evergreen structures, and how do they affect retail investors?
Semi-liquid vehicles offer quarterly redemption windows and a perpetual capital base (evergreen), which provides some liquidity without a fixed end date; this aims to balance investor needs with fund manager operating realities, but introduces fees and governance considerations that differ from traditional funds.
Private Equity is Coming For Your 401(k) (w/ PitchBook's Nizar Tarhuni)
Q: Why is private markets democratization becoming a priority now?
The push arises from a desire to broaden access as highly valued private assets like SpaceX or OpenAI approach liquidity events, while investors seek diversification and inflation hedges beyond public markets; however, the form of access (wrapper, liquidity, fees) matters as much as access itself.
Will AI Kill Consulting? (w/ IGS CEO Matt Umscheid)
Q: What changes should PE firms expect from AI in finance?
AI tools will enable sharper analytics, faster close cycles, and more strategic financial planning, allowing CFOs to spend more time on value-add activities rather than routine data processing.
