  • Did Jim ever find his iPhone?

In August 2021, it was reported that Bethell had replaced his mobile phone earlier that year and not transferred data from his previous phone, meaning that it could not be searched for messages related to an £85m contract with Abingdon Health that was subject to judicial review. In November 2021 he stated in a witness statement that three prior explanations he had given for why he could not access his messages – that he lost his phone, that his phone was defective and that he had given it to a r... more

  • Enjoying the discussion both pre and post election ‘24

    A good listen.

Have enjoyed the discussion from all sides and the selection of guests has been varied, and clearly well thought out.

  • The elephant in the room

Could be a good podcast - they have interesting guests - but Steve Brine does his best to avoid referring to his own party being in power for the last 14 years (including him being a minister). Clearly angling for some Non-Exec roles after the election….

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

83. Can the NHS deliver its new National Cancer Plan?
Q: how will the plan address early diagnosis and stage one/two detections
The guest emphasizes focusing on four intermediate readouts—early diagnosis rates, late-stage reductions, fewer emergency presentations, and reducing the inequality gap—alongside sustained efforts in lung screening and targeted strategies rather than broad, unfocused growth.
83. Can the NHS deliver its new National Cancer Plan?
Q: unpack that 75% survival target and what it means for patient outcomes
Peter explains that the target centers on five-year survival as a headline, with accompanying surrogate readouts like early diagnosis rates, emergency presentations, and inequality gaps to monitor progress year by year, while recognizing the five-year horizon makes day-to-day system management challenging.
84. NHS Boss Sir Jim Mackey on Prevention, GP Health Checks & his future
Q: What would success look like for the prevention agenda within the next few years?
Success would be a reassembled health system where prevention reduces avoidable waste, where patient experience improves, and where the pace of change is matched by how people actually live and access services, not just how policy is written.
84. NHS Boss Sir Jim Mackey on Prevention, GP Health Checks & his future
Q: How do you see the balance between hospital care and community care changing in the near term?
The balance must tilt toward upstream, community-based care with robust neighborhood teams and integrated data while maintaining hospital capacity where it is genuinely needed; this requires rethinking financing, contracts, and organizational forms to enable faster, local decision-making.
84. NHS Boss Sir Jim Mackey on Prevention, GP Health Checks & his future
Q: What is your view on GP health checks and their role in prevention?
GP health checks are valuable but politically and practically challenging; the plan is to re-engage GPs, explore alternative delivery through pharmacists or private sector support if needed, and push a broader, neighborhood-level prevention strategy that integrates primary and community care.
