  • Fantastic interview with Duncan Barkes

I’ve just listen to the Iain Dale All Talk interview with Duncan Barkes. It was great hearing them talk about Duncan’s career as a radio presenter and brought back memories for me of listening to LBC as a teenager in the 1970s up to the current day. A good radio host can keep you engaged and entertained.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

365. From the archive: Jonathan Powell
Q: Why did Gordon Brown struggle in the leadership race despite initial appearances of competence?
Brown often hesitated to take decisive action, seeking more information and delaying difficult decisions, which allowed others to pull ahead and undermined public confidence in his ability to lead. Machiavelli's warnings about indecision being fatal applied to his tenure.
365. From the archive: Jonathan Powell
Q: What does it take to be an effective political leader beyond just being able to win elections?
Leaders must combine courage with emotional intelligence, political instincts, and a temperament that can handle criticism and navigate complex, interlinked institutions. Merely being cerebral or popular is not enough; you need to anticipate public sentiment and act decisively when needed.
361. Carl Cashman
Q: What do you think about the balance between authenticity and image in politics?
He argues that authenticity matters more than polish and that engaging honestly with people—whether through gym stories or local issues—helps politicians connect with constituents.
361. Carl Cashman
Q: How did your upbringing influence your political views and your stance on housing?
He explains growing up in a council house outside Liverpool reinforced his belief in council housing and the importance of accessible, well-managed public services, framing his politics around practical policies that improve everyday life.
353. From the archive: Gyles Brandreth
Q: Can you recommend a book?
Gyles recommends reading the new biography of Kenneth Williams.
