  • Chris Plante set out to make an NPC-style podcast celebrating video games and absolutely nailed it. The interviews are very thoughtful and super interesting to hear conversations I didn't even know I wanted to hear, and the production is also excellent. A must listen for anyone curious about taking a peak behind the curtain of video games.

  • Great critical (positive) game journalism

Amazing analysis, discussion, guest and topic selection. Not 100% convinced by all the backing sound but that’s the nature of subjectivity. Worth every minute of your time.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

This Game Won’t Save the World*
Q: What was compelling about the storytelling structure and what did it allow you to accomplish?
The structure provides multiple entry points and a way to map the psyche across past, present, and future, helping players connect personal memory with broader environmental concerns without being didactic.
Where Do Video Games Go from Here?
Q: How sustainable is the current growth in the games industry, and what might the future look like?
The industry is entering a new normal rather than needing a single 'next big thing'; the market will likely resemble a more diverse ecosystem with ongoing online distribution, smaller players thriving alongside larger ones, and a continued emphasis on quality and accessibility rather than sheer volume.
Video Games Are Art. Are Museums Ready?
Q: What is it like pitching a game to a museum or curator when interactive work is still uncommon in galleries?
Curators are often excited by interactivity but may want strong guidance to avoid destructive outcomes; the artist emphasizes allowing destruction and exploration as a core part of the experience, rather than enforcing a rigid, easily accessible path.
Video Games Are Art. Are Museums Ready?
Q: Where should people find your work if they want to check it out?
People can start at danielbrathwaiteshirley.com and related sites like blacktransarchive.com and other Black Trans Archive projects; if nearby, they can experience exhibitions or performances, including upcoming shows in Berlin.
Video Games Are Art. Are Museums Ready?
Q: And like you said earlier, that the game can become a mediator of sort. Can you give us a specific example of that in action through one of your pieces?
There have been performances where the entire audience makes democratic decisions together, guiding conversations about censorship and social issues, which created a dynamic dialogue that continued beyond the planned script, showing the game as a mediator that prompts real-time group reflection.
