  • Sadly misogynistic

After the three part series of Madonna‘s early career, I decided to go back to listen to the first Madonna episode. It was terribly misogynistic and has not aged well. As I reflect on the last two years of episodes I have listened to, Louis has really kept this misogynistic critical voice through many of the episodes. The shows are really well researched but it is a shame many have such a misogynist bent.

  • Great show

Really like the show, especially the episodes that are just Louie and Russ. I do wish (and this is probably more of an Apple Music thing) that I could see just the non subscriber episodes in my feed- it’s hard to try and go pick through the back catalogue when there’s so many subscriber only episodes.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

TEGAN AND SARA (with Annie Zaleski)
Q: What is the significance of their pop pivot on Heartthrob and its reception?
Heartthrob marked a deliberate shift toward polished dance-pop with indie sensibilities, which broadened their audience but also sparked questions about mainstream viability. Critics noted its maximalist production, while some fans and listeners preferred their earlier, more intimate sound. The move showcased their intent to evolve on their own terms rather than chasing a trend.
TEGAN AND SARA (with Annie Zaleski)
Q: How did their sound evolve from Under Feet Like Ours to So Jealous?
Their sound matured from lo-fi, coffee-house folk to more polished, pop-infused arrangements, with collaborations that expanded their palette. This evolution included sharper lyrics, stronger harmonies, and a willingness to incorporate electric guitars, synths, and diverse producers that broadened their appeal while retaining their core open-hearted storytelling.
TEGAN AND SARA (with Annie Zaleski)
Q: Who are Tegan and Sara and what were their early musical influences?
They were a Calgary-born duo whose early music blended acoustic folk with pop sensibilities, drawing on 90s indie and feminist/DIY ideals, while growing up amid a Canadian cultural ecosystem that supported music production and artist development.
The Best Pop You Might Have Missed in 2026 So Far (with Pitchfork's Walden Green)
Q: How do you decide which fringe artists deserve a place in your pantheon?
Walden Green explains that he looks for artists with a strong sonic identity, compelling world-building, and a trajectory that suggests lasting impact beyond one off-chart moment, favoring those who push boundaries and invite repeat listening.
RUPAUL (with Paper's Joan Summers)
Q: What were RuPaul's most influential early influences in pop culture?
Joan Summers points to Diana Ross, David Bowie, and Cher as the core trio shaping RuPaul's early artistic matrix, with RuPaul channeling Diana Ross's crossover star power, Bowie's gender-bender persona, and Cher's variety-show versatility to craft the RuPaul figure.
