  • PolliNation podcast brings pollinators to life

The best podcast about native bees in the US. It covers all the latest research on native bees and honey bees in Oregon and the rest of the country. Great range of topics.

  • Great pollinator podcast!

This series has consistently had great guests talking about their work on a wider range of pollinator work than I knew existed. Production and audio has gotten better, and the questions from the host are deep. Plus I love his laugh. I’ve leaned a lot and hope to continue learning from this great show!

  • Attracting pollinators garden.

Really wish all plants mentioned were written down makes it easier to take notes. Kept rewinding trying to write them down on my notebook. Is there any link where I can find them? Thanks!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

303 - Wonderful World of Wasps | PolliNation
Q: How do we safely handle or discourage wasp nests near human spaces while supporting ecological benefits?
Spring is the best time to manage nests; remove nests when the queen is away, disrupt pheromones to encourage relocation, and avoid large-scale removal once workers are present, while also providing alternative nesting substrates and native nectar sources to support diverse wasp populations.
303 - Wonderful World of Wasps | PolliNation
Q: Could you walk us through the life cycle of a common solitary wasp in New England?
A typical solitary wasp begins with the female seeking prey, paralyzing it, and provisioning a nest cell with that prey for her larvae; eggs hatch into larvae that develop in cocoons, overwinter as queens of subsequent generations, and repeat the cycle each year, with adults mainly feeding on nectar.
303 - Wonderful World of Wasps | PolliNation
Q: What is a wasp?
A wasp is a member of Hymenoptera, like bees and ants, with many lineages including parasitoids; the distinction from bees is partly about body structure like the wasp waist and feeding habits, and the broader diversity of lifestyles within the group.
302 - Forest Log Landings for Bees | PolliNation
Q: What were the key findings regarding bee diversity and nesting on log landings?
We observed high bee diversity, including species of conservation concern, and a substantial number of ground-nesting bees using the bare ground on landings. This suggests log landings function as important pollinator habitats rather than degraded remnants.
302 - Forest Log Landings for Bees | PolliNation
Q: Could you explain what a log landing is and why it matters for pollinators?
A log landing is the staging area for a timber harvest where logs are stored and equipment operates. These open canopy patches create distinct habitats that can provide nectar, pollen, and nesting sites for pollinators, especially after disturbance creates early-successional conditions.
