  • Politics

I enjoy listening to podcast, and if I’m gonna listen to one about honeybees, I don’t care about your political views anymore than I care about a musician or basketballs players political views. I unfollowed after several snide remarks, such as whether someone is gonna lose their job or “disrupter in chief”. As a veteran, I find that extremely disrespectful regardless of your affiliation! Adios!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Queen Series: Queen Biology and Quality with Dr. David Tarpy (382)
Q: What are the main factors beekeepers should consider beyond queen pheromone when assessing queen quality, and how reliable are body-size and mating metrics?
Tarpy notes that while body size and mating success correlate with quality, brood signals and worker perception are often more important; non-destructive measurements can track size over time, but final quality assessment usually requires destructive checks like sperm viability assessments, which clinics can provide non-destructively only to a limited extent.
Queen Series: Queen Biology and Quality with Dr. David Tarpy (382)
Q: How does the handling and shipping of queens impact their quality, and what best practices should be followed?
Careful handling during shipping is crucial to avoid overheating, which can sterilize sperm and reduce viability; proper cooling, avoiding direct heat, and minimizing time between receiving queens and introducing them into colonies are essential for maintaining queen quality.
Queen Series: Queen Biology and Quality with Dr. David Tarpy (382)
Q: For our listeners who are new to honey bees this year, can you give us a high-level overview of the queen and her role and position in the colony?
Tarpy explains the queen's life as a balance between reproduction and collaboration with workers, noting that queens mate with many drones to build a diverse sperm store, that the queen's early life affects colony outcomes, and that colony health depends on a complex set of signals including brood pheromones and worker-perception, not just the queen's direct actions.
AEEA and the Power of Extension Education (386)
Q: What is AEEA and what does the group do?
AEEA is a network of apiculture extension educators that collaborates to share programs, resources, and professional development to extend university research to beekeepers.
Queen Series: Randy & Eric Oliver on Selective Breeding and Varroa-Resistant Bees (384)
Q: As a new beekeeper, how difficult is it to transition from yard-wide sampling to full-yard sampling for mite washes?
It is challenging and time-consuming at first, but with a systematic approach and a phased rollout, you can scale up. Begin with limited colonies, build standardized data collection, and gradually expand while maintaining careful tagging and tracking so you can identify which colonies show true resistance.
