  • Politics

I enjoy listening to podcast, and if I’m gonna listen to one about honeybees, I don’t care about your political views anymore than I care about a musician or basketballs players political views. I unfollowed after several snide remarks, such as whether someone is gonna lose their job or “disrupter in chief”. As a veteran, I find that extremely disrespectful regardless of your affiliation! Adios!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Queen Series: Randy & Eric Oliver on Selective Breeding and Varroa-Resistant Bees (384)
Q: As a new beekeeper, how difficult is it to transition from yard-wide sampling to full-yard sampling for mite washes?
It is challenging and time-consuming at first, but with a systematic approach and a phased rollout, you can scale up. Begin with limited colonies, build standardized data collection, and gradually expand while maintaining careful tagging and tracking so you can identify which colonies show true resistance.
Queen Series: Ang Roell on Queen Breeding and Hygienic Genetics (385)
Q: With early-season queen production shifting due to weather or disasters, how should beekeepers educate customers and manage timing for late-season divides and requeening?
Educate customers about options like cells and virgins, plan for late-season splits, and adjust expectations for queen availability; provide practical timelines and support for managing requeening within different ecological contexts.
Queen Series: Ang Roell on Queen Breeding and Hygienic Genetics (385)
Q: How far apart do apiaries need to be for queens and drones to mate with each other, and what are the practical implications for two yards close together vs spread out?
Close yards (about two miles apart) can allow drones to mix while maintaining some separation between mating yards and mother yards, but the balance depends on ecology and the scale of drone production; the goal is to saturate the drone mating pool without losing control of genetics.
Queen Series: Honey Bee Queen Biology and Mating Behavior with Dr. Juliana Rangel (383)
Q: Is there anything you would like to leave listeners with regarding their queens this year?
Focus on monitoring queen health and egg laying, ensure genetic diversity by considering drone availability across apiaries, and keep records to guide decisions about prophylactic queen replacement and timing of queen rearing, as nutrition and drone health are foundational to queen success.
Queen Series: Honey Bee Queen Biology and Mating Behavior with Dr. Juliana Rangel (383)
Q: What would you like beekeepers to understand about queen mating behavior and what defines a good mating?
Queen mating is complex and variable; factors include nuptial flight timing, drone availability, weather, and the genetic quality of drones; a good mating is one that results in a queen with viable sperm across multiple drones, adequate longevity, and strong colony performance.
