  • It grew on me!

I wasn’t sure about this podcast at first. Seemed long and drawn out, but the more I listened to it I was hooked. I like the energy between Jamie and Amy and contrast between experts. There all kinds of experts out there, and that was the whole point of this podcast. I listened to every single episode, starting from episode 1. Episode 1 is like my Rocky I. It’s very raw, and it’s my favorite.

  • The best bee podcast! Jamie Ellis is a rockstar!

I was so sad when they stopped making episodes of Two Bees in A Podcast! I think I’ve listened to every episode. I seem to recall that it was originally designed to have rotating list of hosts, but then it just became the Jamie & Amy (Vu) Show. Loved it! It was great! I’m sure I’ll still listen to old episodes, but it feels like my best friend died! 😥😞☹️

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Episode 236: Survivor Populations of Honey Bees with Raffaele Dall’Olio
Q: What is the role of feral (free-living) bees in supporting managed survivor programs?
Feral populations can provide diverse genes that help resilience; they should be monitored and potentially integrated through careful selection and breeding strategies to enrich genetic diversity in managed stocks, while acknowledging that feral populations can also carry different disease pressures.
Episode 236: Survivor Populations of Honey Bees with Raffaele Dall’Olio
Q: What practical steps should a beekeeper take to produce their own survivor stock?
Start with a resilient stock, ensure isolated mating, and potentially establish a group or association-level breeding program to share resources, data, and genetics, since complete isolation or full genetic control is costly but essential for sustained gains.
Episode 236: Survivor Populations of Honey Bees with Raffaele Dall’Olio
Q: Can survivor stock be maintained in a production beekeeping setting, and how would you approach that?
Yes, but it requires deliberate management: isolate the mating to control genetics, set up a dedicated apiary, keep consistent management across colonies, and continuously evaluate traits like mite resistance and brood care to transfer gains to the next generation.
Episode 234: Writing, Beekeeping, and Inspiring Young Beekeepers with Patti Sherlock
Q: Do winter queens lose weight, and what is the evidence?
Yes, a 2015 study found queens lighter with smaller ovaries between November and January when no eggs are laid.
Episode 234: Writing, Beekeeping, and Inspiring Young Beekeepers with Patti Sherlock
Q: Should new equipment be purchased or can you reuse old gear after mothballing mistakes?
If mothballs were used, safer to replace affected equipment; tin the beeswax can absorb naphthalene for a very long time, and it is risky for colonies.
