  • Deep insight into the creative process…

Nicky Schrire is such an insightful and knowledgeable interviewer, it’s obvious she puts her subjects at ease so they open up and share not just their wonderful music, but also their life stories and thoughts on what it means to be a creative artist in this very special music form. And then there’s the hundreds of amazing interviews by Jason Crane in the Jazz Session archives. I’ll be returning to this podcast for years to come.

The guest explains that Jerry Allen provided technical and creative guidance early on, Thich Nhat Hanh offered spiritual and meditative perspectives that influence the tempo of life and music, and Steve Lacey's recordings and teaching have strongly impacted her saxophone approach and phrasing, creating a lineage of inspiration that informs both technique and emotional intent.
The Jazz Session #650: Jon Irabagon
Q: Can you describe this instrument a little bit?
The bass saxophone is about five feet tall, weighs about 20 pounds, and plays an octave lower than a tenor.

Q: Could you say something about that?
Meditation helps me stay focused and prevents overwhelming feelings as a parent.
The Jazz Session #649: Benjamin Lackner
Q: Can you talk about why you write music?
Writing music has always been my form of self-expression and a way to connect, something I've known I wanted to do since I was six years old.

Q: Can you tell me why you chose that title?
The word Spindrift resonated with me, inspired from observing mini tornadoes and reflecting on the chaotic political landscape.
