  • (Mostly) great stuff

Lots of great content. Very occasionally a dubious claim will be made, e.g. ‘syllabi are legal documents’ -this is one of the biggest, bogus tall-tales of HE!

  • Thank You!

Just wanted to thank you for your contribution to the field. As an active health and PE teacher, I have always struggled to keep up with the new research within our discipline. This podcast has changed that. I am so incredibly grateful for it and am actively unpacking each episode to use it in my classroom. Thank you 10x over!!

  • Innovative!

An innovative approach to getting important work out of the “ivory tower” and into the mainstream. I love these for undergraduate and graduate students because they are easily consumable. Fantastic contribution! Bravo!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

412: Technology, Physical Activity, and Schools — A Conversation with Dr. Taemin Ha
Q: What were the key findings from your two-study dissertation about technology use and its predictors?
The first study showed that personal characteristics, especially licensure, predicted technology use more than school characteristics; the second study found that only certain innovation attributes, like complexity and trailability, predicted use, and that ease of use and comfort influenced adoption across staff, regardless of tech expertise.
410:Heard from the Source: LGBTQ+ Youth and the Barriers in PE
Q: What practical steps can PE teachers take to create more inclusive spaces based on the findings?
Adopt inclusive language, move away from gendered grouping and strict binary divisions, provide gender-neutral changing options, design activities that emphasize participation and enjoyment over hierarchical competition, and leverage adventure-education principles to reduce power imbalances and increase access for all students.
410:Heard from the Source: LGBTQ+ Youth and the Barriers in PE
Q: What were the key design elements of the convergent mixed-methods approach used in the study, and why was this combination important?
The study combined a validated survey to quantify barriers, with community mapping and focus groups to capture spatial and emotional dimensions of safety and inclusion, allowing the researchers to connect statistical patterns with lived experiences and to understand how these barriers emerged and reinforced each other.
405: Nordic Article Club, Sustainable Development in PE
Q: Sustainability is a term you hear a lot, but what exactly do you mean by reframing PE with sustainability goals?
Reframing PE means broadening what the subject stands for, moving from a sole focus on physical activities and sports to include questions about lifestyles, norms, and the futures we're preparing students for, thereby introducing sustainability as a lens that guides content choice and pedagogical approach.
400: The Podcast Keynote by Dr. Laura Alfrey
Q: What educational purpose do you believe fitness testing serves, given its controversial nature?
Alfrey stresses that students should learn to monitor and evaluate their own fitness as part of a broader physical activity program rather than purely through fitness testing.
