  • Great both for Real Baseball Fans and Fantasy Advice

I’ve listened to the podcasts for Nick and his staff for several years. Player analysis is top notch and interesting. They combine metrics and data with practical application as to what is important from past results and what to look for. For any fans that enjoyed watching Steve Stone analyze pitchers during a game on WGN, you’ll love this content.

  • Slow down and take a breath

The First Pitch Podcast is one of my favorite sports podcasts. It starts my day with a recap of the previous day and gets me ready for the day ahead. I love that it does it without any opinion. Four stars for two reasons. WAY too many ads. At least a quarter of the show is ads and the breaks are like 4 minutes, that’s twice as long as TV. The host speaks so fast, I’m always checking to see if I have 2X on. It gives me anxiety. Seriously, what’s the rush?

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

TAA 8 - What Are Park Factors Worth? (with Sara Sanchez)
Q: How should fantasy players use park factors when evaluating players across different parks, especially given three-year versus single-year factors?
Use park factors as context rather than a sole driver; three-year factors smooth variability but may miss current changes, while single-year factors capture recent shifts; combine them with an understanding of how the park interacts with a player's batted-ball tendencies to make more informed lineup decisions.
TAA 8 - What Are Park Factors Worth? (with Sara Sanchez)
Q: To kick us off here, Kyle, what does a Park Factor actually measure and what does that number mean?
Park Factor measures how a given ballpark affects overall outcomes compared with a neutral park, often focusing on runs but extendable to homer rates and BABIP; it's used to understand whether a park inflates or suppresses certain outcomes and to guide how to adjust projections.
CFT 78 - Who Is MLB's Top Rookie SP?
Q: How important is a pitcher's handling of platoon splits and a two-sided approach for success in the majors?
They emphasize that while platoon splits matter, multiple pitches that work against both hands increase a pitcher's sustainable value, with Fuentes and Prelip cited as examples of this balance.
CFT 78 - Who Is MLB's Top Rookie SP?
Q: Which rookie starter has the most reliable path to immediate fantasy value this season?
The hosts lean toward Connor Prelip due to a broader arsenal, strong changeup, and higher floor, while acknowledging Fuentes and Scott as compelling but more volatile options.
The Shallows EP 002 - Sink or Swim
Q: How do you draft positional versatility to maximize your bench spots?
Aim for players with multi-positional eligibility and draft utility players as outfielders if possible.
