  • Love the podcast

I really enjoy listening to Pints with Jack. I love the three hosts and their dynamic. I’ll probably never tire of the ‘Till We Have Faces vs Great Divorce’ debates. But what I appreciate most is that these are men ‘with chests’.

  • I find this podcast to be interesting and entertaining. I often use it as a primer for works we are reading in my local C.S. Lewis Society. I have also found several non-Lewis works to tackle by listening. The hosts are very knowledgeable themselves, but also have guests that are among the most respected Lewis scholars available. Each of the 3 hosts approaches the episode from their own unique background and experience. This one is on my automatic download list.

  • Virtual CS Lewis Book Club

The format of a chapter by chapter discussion of the books of CS Lewis is wonderful. I appreciate the insights of the three contributors. Each one adds his own perspective from a different background and temperament. I gave this rating 4 stars instead of 5 because I would like to have a way to “filter out” the distracting put-downs directed against Matt (who is delightful as a first-time reader of many of the books covered) from the other two hosts, especially from Andrew.

S9E29 – Jack's Bookshelf – "Coleridge", After Hours with Dr. Carolyn Weber
Q: What have you been up to since your last appearance?
Dr. Weber outlines ongoing teaching, a new book project, and continued work with Inklings scholarship, emphasizing spiritual formation and how Coleridge's thought intersects with Lewis.
S9E28 – Jack's Bookshelf – "Chaucer", After Hours with Dr. Simon Horobin
Q: What is the structure and framing device of The Canterbury Tales as discussed in the episode?
The Canterbury Tales are framed around a pilgrimage from the Tabard Inn in Southwark, with pilgrims telling tales to pass the time on the journey to Canterbury, a structure that creates dynamic interactions and tensions among the storytellers.
S9E28 – Jack's Bookshelf – "Chaucer", After Hours with Dr. Simon Horobin
Q: How does Lewis reinterpret Chaucer in his scholarly work?
Lewis views Chaucer as a medievalizer who elevates and revises the stories from Italian and French sources, incorporating medieval rhetorical theory and ideas about predestination and fate, which Lewis argues become central to Chaucer's most sophisticated works like Troilus and Criseyde.
S9E25: “Charles Williams Month – Friends in Co-inherence”, After Hours with Dr. Paul Fiddes
Q: What is the origin of the idea of co-inherence and is it biblical or patristic in its roots?
It springs from biblical language about being in Christ and in the Father, is traced through the Church Fathers with perichoresis, and was later translated into English as Co-Inherence by Williams' influences, combining both biblical and patristic strands.
S9E23: "Charles Williams Month - The Third Inkling", After Hours with Grevil Lindop
Q: What were the challenges and rewards of researching and writing The Third Inkling?
The project required gathering interviews and a vast archive, navigating resistance from Williams's family, and coordinating access to major libraries like the Bodleian and The Wade Center, but it yielded a nuanced portrait that situates Williams within the Inklings and reveals the breadth of his work.
