  • Love the podcast

I really enjoy listening to Pints with Jack. I love the three hosts and their dynamic. I’ll probably never tire of the ‘Till We Have Faces vs Great Divorce’ debates. But what I appreciate most is that these are men ‘with chests’.

  • I find this podcast to be interesting and entertaining. I often use it as a primer for works we are reading in my local C.S. Lewis Society. I have also found several non-Lewis works to tackle by listening. The hosts are very knowledgeable themselves, but also have guests that are among the most respected Lewis scholars available. Each of the 3 hosts approaches the episode from their own unique background and experience. This one is on my automatic download list.

  • Virtual CS Lewis Book Club

The format of a chapter by chapter discussion of the books of CS Lewis is wonderful. I appreciate the insights of the three contributors. Each one adds his own perspective from a different background and temperament. I gave this rating 4 stars instead of 5 because I would like to have a way to “filter out” the distracting put-downs directed against Matt (who is delightful as a first-time reader of many of the books covered) from the other two hosts, especially from Andrew.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

S9E25: “Charles Williams Month – Friends in Co-inherence”, After Hours with Dr. Paul Fiddes
Q: What is the origin of the idea of co-inherence and is it biblical or patristic in its roots?
It springs from biblical language about being in Christ and in the Father, is traced through the Church Fathers with perichoresis, and was later translated into English as Co-Inherence by Williams' influences, combining both biblical and patristic strands.
S9E23: "Charles Williams Month - The Third Inkling", After Hours with Grevil Lindop
Q: What were the challenges and rewards of researching and writing The Third Inkling?
The project required gathering interviews and a vast archive, navigating resistance from Williams's family, and coordinating access to major libraries like the Bodleian and The Wade Center, but it yielded a nuanced portrait that situates Williams within the Inklings and reveals the breadth of his work.
S9E23: "Charles Williams Month - The Third Inkling", After Hours with Grevil Lindop
Q: How did Williams's esoteric interests intersect with his orthodox Christianity, and how does that affect how we read him?
His esotericism, including study of the Kabbalah and Rosicrucian influences, co-inherence and substitution as theological ideas, and an interest in ritual and mysticism, are integral to understanding his fiction and theology, but they also sparked controversy and debate about orthodoxy, making his reading a balance between spiritual depth and critical caution.
S9E23: "Charles Williams Month - The Third Inkling", After Hours with Grevil Lindop
Q: Could you just give us a whistle stop tour of the life of Charles Williams?
Williams emerged from a poor North London background, educated himself through evening classes, rose from a lowly proofreader at Oxford University Press to a senior editor, and developed into a writer whose work spans novels, poetry, and theology, all while engaging with occult and esoteric traditions that informed his Christian thought.
S9E22: Abolition – Retrospective, After Hours with Dr. Michael Ward
Q: What connections exist between Abolition and The Hideous Strength, and how do these relate to Lewis's apologetics?
Ward outlines seven connections, including depictions of men without chests, the deadened perception of literature, and the theme of power and virtue, showing how both works articulate a consistent framework toward objective value and ethical life.
