  • Hilarious! Entertaining!

I don’t even surf or live near the ocean and I tune into these guys every week to learn about surf culture. Hosts are super funny.

  • few chuckles, zero laughs

I’ve listened to quite a few of these episodes because I like Sterling’s humor, his respect for da rulez and his spirit connection to the ocean. But their few jokes are recycled endlessly, Ryan’s ultra-right fashy politics are frankly rancid and he pushes them every episode (he gushes about how he knows Russel Brand) and Sterling has a super agro localist stance about surfing that is not aligned with his own experience as a pro, surfing other people’s breaks around the world.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

EP 129 | Which Surfer Is Kelly Slater’s Eskimo Bro? | Pinch My Salt
Q: How did the sponsorship system affect careers back then, compared to now?
They reflect on the old carrot-dangling approach, the need to perform to secure contracts, and how sponsorships could derail or support young surfers, contrasted with today's more media-driven pathways and broader awareness of planning for careers after surfing.
EP 129 | Which Surfer Is Kelly Slater’s Eskimo Bro? | Pinch My Salt
Q: Do you think you're Eskimo brothers with Kelly Slater?
The hosts and Marshall discuss rumors and the complexity of relationships in the pro surfing world, emphasizing that while rumors circulate, concrete truth is murky and relationships are nuanced, with lingering respect and competitive history shaping current dynamics.
EP 125 | Jack Johnson was KICKED OUT of Kelly Slater’s Band? | Pinch My Salt
Q: Do you think you'll ever get the Surfers back together?
The conversation suggests there was interest and past members felt they were in or out of the loop, with reminiscences about who was in the original band and why some moments led to changes; the overall tone indicates ongoing curiosity but no definitive reunion confirmed.
EP 126 | WSL’S NEW ZEALAND DISASTER?! | Pinch My Salt
Q: What was the energy like at the Raglan contest and how did the local setup affect the broadcast?
The energy was high in conversation but the surfing didn't deliver the expected swell, leading the hosts to pivot to on-site chatter and interviews with a local pro, which added authenticity to the coverage.
EP 124 | Cindy Crawford Called Him WHAT?! Raimana's Celebrity Stories | Pinch My Salt
Q: How did you become involved with the Surf Ranch and wave pools?
A mix of early on-the-ground involvement with organizing and coaching, then formal roles helping guests ride waves safely, which evolved into teaching and guiding in the pools.
