  • Good lineup, I listen but.:.

Interesting topics and people brought on but I feel like Jamie falls flat as interviewer sometimes. The questions sometimes are superficial and often the admiration for his subjects turns into fanboy status that influence his questions.

  • Conversations that slowly unravel the labyrinth of surf culture

I recently listened to your interview with Devon Howard on the greyhound up to the Noosa Festival of Surfing. Your conversation with Devon felt like a slow unraveling of the labyrinth of surf culture and had so many touch points to my individual surf experience—I had to pause a chuckle a few times at the absurdity.

Harry Bryant
Q: How did you first connect with shapers like Paul Gravel, and why is board selection so important to you?
I met Paul Gravel through chance in South Australia, and that connection opened the door to custom, one-off boards. I started focusing on singular, well-considered boards to maximize performance in specific conditions, which has become a core part of my surfing identity.
Harry Bryant
Q: How did COVID affect Motel Hell and the plan for the film?
COVID forced us to pivot from a full-scale production to a more intimate, Australia-centered journey, filming with a smaller crew and a weathered-but-creative approach that ultimately shaped the project into something personal and rewarding.
Harry Bryant
Q: What was it like coming into the beach after that Pipe Masters ride, with the crowd going wild?
The visuals of the crowd and the beach erupting around me made it feel like a football stadium; it was overwhelming in the most exhilarating way, and I felt a strong sense of gratitude for the support and shared energy of the moment.
Shirley Rogers
Q: What about the commercialization of the sport—how did money and brands change photography on the North Shore and in your career?
She notes that the money was in advertising and sponsorships, the tours grew, and it gradually became more crowded, changing the industry's dynamics and opportunities for photographers.
Shirley Rogers
Q: What was it like to be in the North Shore scene as a woman among all these dudes?
She describes being a pioneer, being one of very few women photographers, and how early work with notable surfers helped pave the way for future women photographers.
