  • Good lineup, I listen but.:.

Interesting topics and people brought on but I feel like Jamie falls flat as interviewer sometimes. The questions sometimes are superficial and often the admiration for his subjects turns into fanboy status that influence his questions.

  • Conversations that slowly unravel the labyrinth of surf culture

I recently listened to your interview with Devon Howard on the greyhound up to the Noosa Festival of Surfing. Your conversation with Devon felt like a slow unraveling of the labyrinth of surf culture and had so many touch points to my individual surf experience—I had to pause a chuckle a few times at the absurdity.

This podcast is not just for surfers. Shirley Rogers
Q: What about the commercialization of the sport—how did money and brands change photography on the North Shore and in your career?
She notes that the money was in advertising and sponsorships, the tours grew, and it gradually became more crowded, changing the industry's dynamics and opportunities for photographers.
Shirley Rogers
Q: What was it like to be in the North Shore scene as a woman among all these dudes?
She describes being a pioneer, being one of very few women photographers, and how early work with notable surfers helped pave the way for future women photographers.
Shirley Rogers
Q: As I understand it, you lived your early years in Japan and then Texas, and then you moved to Hawaii around the time of high school?
She confirms the sequence and explains how moving to Hawaii opened her eyes to a local scene that felt like home after red-dirt Texas, and how this set her on a path toward photography.
Kai Neville
Q: How do you approach the balance between commercial work and independent projects?
I treat commercial work as a way to fund and fuel my personal projects, while keeping a strong sense of creative integrity; I use briefs to sharpen storytelling and then apply the lessons to the more intimate, independent pieces I'm drawn to.
Kai Neville
Q: At what point did you know you wanted to be a filmmaker?
I originally wanted to be a surfer, but as I moved from Noosa to the Sunshine Coast and found film, I realized I loved the process of making a surf film almost more than surfing itself, so I pursued filmmaking with a clear curiosity and joy.
