  • Less was more

Erik Tait’s Penguin podcast has been a weekly highlight for the last five years. A thirty minute interview that didn’t ask the same old questions. A midpoint ad would often feature a product with a discount.

Now it’s 75 to 90 minutes of shilling products and rambling conversations with Nick. Nick seems like a good guy but he never seems prepared. Maybe he thinks it’s cute?

The few interviews that have been done since the change are still good but not as tight and engaging. In the last six month... more

  • Once great, now not so sure

This has long been my favorite magician podcast. Focused, tight, and interesting. But the change to a longer format has me listening less often. I think Penguin needs to remember that “always leave them wanting more” is sage advice.

  • Enjoyable with a couple of warts

This is a weekly listen for me. Erik is improving as a host, but still has a tendency to interject too much of himself into the interview. I sometimes feel he has a need to show his knowledge and it’s irritating.

At times the interviewee audio stinks and, frankly, shouldn’t be posted. As an example the recent interview with Magic Balay should have stayed in the can. It sounded like he was yelling at an IPhone across the room. In most cases audio is about attention to detail and, possibly, a sma... more

Erik Tait - Listener Questions! - S7E28
Q: What advice would you give to beginners interested in mentalism about what to study or practice first?
Start with approachable mentalism effects designed for beginners, such as Cypher or simple foundational pieces, and progressively move toward more structured lectures and longer form material as you gain confidence and stage presence.
Erik Tait - Listener Questions! - S7E28
Q: How should a performer approach crafting a competition act to maximize overall scoring across categories?
Study each competition's rules and scoring rubric to balance technique, originality, and the number of tricks per minute, ensuring the act has a strong magical atmosphere and clear storytelling rather than focusing solely on difficult moves.
Erik Tait - Listener Questions! - S7E28
Q: What strategies can a magician use to handle repeat performances for the same audience at a restaurant?
Identify which tables have seen you before, rotate and reserve some tricks for newcomers, and have a few 'return to table' wins that you can bring back when the group is ready for more, while keeping a couple of new routines for fresh reactions.
Rob Balchunas - The Balloon Twister's Balloon Twister! - S7E24
Q: What's your approach to performing balloon art for adults as opposed to kids?
My primary audience is adults; my humor and presentation are tailored for grown-ups, though I can still do family-friendly pieces, and I choose projects that resonate with adult sensibilities and humor.
Rob Balchunas - The Balloon Twister's Balloon Twister! - S7E24
Q: How did you start with balloons and what sparked your move into more detailed pieces like the DeLorean?
My fascination began with a balloon kit from a circus-influenced upbringing, and after studying Captain Vigil's Balloon Art book, I started experimenting with different balloon types to expand beyond basic shapes, leading to more complex designs like the DeLorean.
