Voices in Pain - Sebastian Senociain
Q: What have you learned from the results so far and what are the next steps?
The results show a roughly 70% retention rate with meaningful improvements, especially in the face-to-face cohorts; the next steps include follow-up at 12 months, measuring cost effectiveness, and exploring sustainability and broader funding through the ICB and Pain Cafe expansion.
Voices in Pain - Sebastian Senociain
Q: Can you tell us about the origin of the program and how it integrated Live Well with Pain with trauma-informed approaches?
Sebastian explains that the program started as a pilot in primary care in Cornwall, combining Live Well with Pain content with trauma-informed, polyvagal-informed practices to address pain in a more holistic way, and then expanded into an 11-week intervention led by an in-house team.
Living Well with Pain: Insights from the UK Conference
Q: What is the big idea you want clinicians and patients to take from this conference?
The big idea is that pain is a life-encompassing experience and care should start from the person's entire life, with an emphasis on living well rather than solely curing pain.
Exploring the Mind-Body Connection in Chronic Pain
Q: How do you decide when to use CBT versus Pain Reprocessing Therapy or ACT in a chronic pain patient?
I use an integrative mindset: CBT can target conscious stories and beliefs, ACT emphasizes values and acceptance, while PRT targets predictive processing and the brain's threat signaling. The choice depends on where in the nervous system the intervention can make a wedge, and often a combination across levels is most effective.
Exploring the Mind-Body Connection in Chronic Pain
Q: For you, Amber, how does psychology fit into the mind-body model of chronic pain and differentiate Healthy Mind Psychology from others?
Psychology offers a spectrum of modalities, not a one-size-fits-all approach. We tailor therapy to the individual, combining CBT, ACT, PRT, mindfulness, and lifestyle factors while considering neurobiological and psychosocial contributors to pain. The goal is patient-centered, integrative care that matches the right therapy to the right person and leverages collaboration with other professionals.
