  • Great podcast

Update: 1 year into listening and I still love this podcast so much! I’ve learned a lot about parenting a hockey player.

I really enjoyed listening to this podcast. I actually listened for the first time yesterday, to the episode on “How to Identify Talent at an Early Age,” my son is young and he feels discouraged that other kids are bigger and faster, but I feel confident that the sport will help my son develop into a good teammate. Talent will come with practice, but I agree that it’s import... more

  • Monday Morning Coaching

This is an excellent discussion. I wish I could send this out to all the parents on my sons team, but as the wife of one of the assistant coaches, it might not go over so well. 🤣

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The Ride to The Rink: Scott Howes on Hockey IQ, Video Review & Smarter Hockey Habits
Q: Scott, what do you think is a good habit kids should start right now if they want to improve their hockey skills?
Kids should start by watching complete games to understand hockey IQ, avoid over-reliance on highlights, and then analyze a chosen player to infer why decisions are made, followed by reviewing their own shifts to learn from their own choices and mistakes.
The Shoulder Check Movement: Changing Mental Health in Youth Hockey with Rob Thorsen
Q: Tell us about him. Tell us what happened and why you felt the need to help others.
Rob shares that Hayden Thorsen, a young hockey player, died by suicide in 2022 at age 16. Hayden was known for noticing and checking in on others, which inspired Rob to channel grief into a movement that promotes empathy, kindness, and a culture of looking after one another in hockey and beyond.
The Ride to The Rink: Why Checking In Might Be the Most Important Thing You Do on Your Team
Q: What is the core idea behind The Shoulder Check initiative?
The core idea is to encourage every player to reach out, check in, and make contact with teammates to understand how they are really doing, thereby strengthening team culture and supporting one another.
The Ride to The Rink: Mike Knuble’s Net-Front Scoring Secrets (Go Where the Goals Are)
Q: What advice could you give to a youth player right now in embracing the opportunity to experiment in different roles and understand that their game is always evolving?
Knuble emphasizes that players should be willing to try new roles within the team system, stay self-aware about strengths and weaknesses, listen to coaches, and be ready to adjust their game to fit the team needs, all while continuing to develop in multiple areas so they can contribute in various lineups.
From NHL Ironman to Hockey Dad: Karl Alzner on Development, Leadership & Balance
Q: What does real leadership look like in youth hockey?
Leadership should be about following the team game plan, being reliable, and uplifting teammates, not simply wearing an emblem; captains should help the team function and improve collectively.
