Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Coachella Valley Firebirds Assistant Coach Stu Bickel: Developing elite defencemen, improving the breakout and the power of video
Q: What happens when a defenseman makes a mistake during a breakout and returns to the bench—how do you handle that moment?
If a player knows what went wrong, I remind them of the correct sequence, like using the post and then reading the middle and cross-ice options; if not, I defer to video later to avoid harming their confidence and to keep the rest of the game productive.
Coachella Valley Firebirds Assistant Coach Stu Bickel: Developing elite defencemen, improving the breakout and the power of video
Q: What goes into making one of those game segment cuts used in your one-on-one meetings?
I clip each player's individual shifts, label them with a code for each defenseman, and build concise, theme-based video segments that clearly illustrate the points I want to reinforce in the upcoming meetings.
Coachella Valley Firebirds Assistant Coach Stu Bickel: Developing elite defencemen, improving the breakout and the power of video
Q: When you first get in front of a prospect, and I'm assuming that could be watching them on tape, what are the first things that you look for in a player's game?
The first thing I look for is attitude—whether the player is willing to learn, asks questions, and shows a desire to improve. Beyond that, compete and a coachable mindset are crucial because those aspects can be taught and reinforced with video examples to help the player grow.
Youngstown Phantoms Head Coach Ryan Ward: Finding your identity, creativity through accountability and power of the fundamentals
Q: How did you promote yourself for the Youngstown job, given you weren't the most popular hire?
Ward describes leveraging ongoing performance, building relationships, showing consistency in video work, and aligning with a strong staff to prove his value and fit for the program.
Coaching Legend Scotty Bowman: A hockey history lesson, Dick Irvin practice tips and tactics for today's game
Q: So Scotty, when you were 21 years old and just starting your coaching career, did you feel coaching would be your life's work?
I felt fortunate to have opportunities in Ottawa and the Junior Canadians, and I recognized early that the exposure to strong players and mentors would shape my approach; I believed in learning on the job and gradually building the systems and philosophy that would define my teams.
