Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Calgary Flames Skating Coach Danielle Fujita: Strength vs power, slowing down to speed up and the power of manifestation
Q: How do you talk to players to ensure they actually learn and apply what you teach?
By using language that matches their frame of reference, bringing in visual aids, and offering multiple cues that connect the body part with the action, so they can digest and apply it.
Warroad High School Head Coach Jay Hardwick: Growing up in "Hockey Town USA," State Championship journey and the open rink advantage
Q: What do you think makes your program's open hockey approach work so well in Warroad?
The openness is possible because of the town's tight-knit nature; older players set examples, younger players learn by watching and joining, and siblings or families help regulатe behavior, creating a respectful, self-policing environment where kids learn to play and think the game together.
Warroad High School Head Coach Jay Hardwick: Growing up in "Hockey Town USA," State Championship journey and the open rink advantage
Q: If I were to ask your players what habit Hardwick harps on most, what would they say?
They would point to the accumulation of small details that shape larger success, including face-offs, breakout execution, forechecking, and the transition through the neutral zone, all reinforced by consistent reminders from Hardwick about how these pieces fit into the bigger game plan.
Coachella Valley Firebirds Assistant Coach Stu Bickel: Developing elite defencemen, improving the breakout and the power of video
Q: What happens when a defenseman makes a mistake during a breakout and returns to the bench—how do you handle that moment?
If a player knows what went wrong, I remind them of the correct sequence, like using the post and then reading the middle and cross-ice options; if not, I defer to video later to avoid harming their confidence and to keep the rest of the game productive.
Coachella Valley Firebirds Assistant Coach Stu Bickel: Developing elite defencemen, improving the breakout and the power of video
Q: What goes into making one of those game segment cuts used in your one-on-one meetings?
I clip each player's individual shifts, label them with a code for each defenseman, and build concise, theme-based video segments that clearly illustrate the points I want to reinforce in the upcoming meetings.
