As for the men, I think they can be forgiven for being caught up in the moment. This should have been easy. Actually say the words “I’m sorry”. They can say they were caught up in the moment but in no way meant to denigrate... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Be a Thermostat, Not a Thermometer: How to Be a Great Leader, with Guest John O’Sullivan, Changing the Game Project Founder - EP 421
Q: What is the core message behind the be-a-thermostat, not-a-thermometer principle, and how should captains apply it in daily team life?
The principle is about leading with adaptive energy: raise energy when the team is down and lower it when it's too high, always aiming to stabilize the room and guide the team back to productive focus and performance.
Be a Thermostat, Not a Thermometer: How to Be a Great Leader, with Guest John O’Sullivan, Changing the Game Project Founder - EP 421
Q: How can coaches implement the curriculum with captains in a practical way without overwhelming them or the staff?
We designed a 10-session curriculum that can be facilitated by an assistant coach or strength coach, with two chapters per session, plus reflection questions, followed by a group discussion to reinforce lessons and build trust between captains and coaches.
Be a Thermostat, Not a Thermometer: How to Be a Great Leader, with Guest John O’Sullivan, Changing the Game Project Founder - EP 421
Q: You talk about leadership development as something that should be intentional and curriculum-driven. How did you structure the three sections of your book to help captains become effective leaders?
The book is laid out in three sections: first, the qualities of leaders and captains; second, the typical responsibilities within the team; and third, real-life challenges captains face, with practices and discussions designed to build those leadership muscles over time.
Dialed & Driven Mentality, with Guest Jeff Lerg, Former Professional Goalie - EP 419
Q: What role does goal setting play in developing mental toughness?
Goal setting creates a clear path from long-term to short-term actions, with controllable, tangible milestones that athletes can track and be held accountable for.
Dialed & Driven Mentality, with Guest Jeff Lerg, Former Professional Goalie - EP 419
Q: How do you define the “driven” aspect of the program?
Driven is about understanding the task at hand, executing at the highest level, environment, commitment, consistency, and doing whatever it takes without excuses.
