  • Jason Bailey & Mike Hull are back!

Great hearing the gang back together after a brief hiatus. Loved hearing the deep dive of Godfather II, which I hadn’t seen all the way through until last night, despite having seen the original multiple times. Look forward to more episodes.

Side note: I had to turn my volume way up with AirPods, not sure if it was a tech issue on my end, but I’m curious if anyone had the same issue.

Series gets better, it would be great if some names and just general words were pronounced properly. Also Russell is part Māori.

  • Great podcast, bad sound

I really enjoy this podcast which goes into the most granular, deep dive of one of the greatest movies ever made, but my God the sound is awful and inconsistent from episode to episode. Some episodes the sound is so low I have to really crank the volume and then when a commercial comes on my ears are blasted into oblivion. I’m up to episode 46 and hoping they get the sound issues worked out in episodes to come. But, that all aside, it’s a really fun show with a very likeable host and guests, som... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

THE MINSIDER PART 1: WHAT I’VE SEEN I LIKE
Q: What was the question he was gonna ask?
The discussion suggests the question would have probed the core stakes of Bergman's role and the newsroom's responsibility, with the answer emphasizing the journalist's duty to pursue truth and the limits of media power. The exchange highlights how the scene uses concise dialogue to frame the entire narrative.
GUIDE FOR THE FILM FANATIC: "Café Flesh” with Will Sloan
Q: So what film did you select for us to discuss today?
Will Sloan chose Café Flesh partly because of its restoration, its position at the intersection of porn and high art, and its provocative stance within Danny Peary's Guide For The Film Fanatic, as well as its interesting production history and cast.
THE DECADE PROJECT 2016: HELL OR HIGH WATER w/ S.A Cosby
Q: Tell me about your experience with Hello High Water.
Cosby discusses how the film's restrained, authentic portrayal of poverty and its Westward setting impacted his own writing and reading of American myth. He reflects on the cast, the director's grounded approach, and the way the film balances tenderness with rugged realism.
GUIDE FOR THE FILM FANATIC: ”The Harder They Come” with Ashley Clark
Q: How does the film balance crime narrative with cultural commentary?
The narrative follows a hit record driving a young man's ascent and downfall, while the surrounding context shows how institutions and exploitation shape the protagonist's world, creating a meta-commentary on fame and media spectacle.
GUIDE FOR THE FILM FANATIC: ”The Harder They Come” with Ashley Clark
Q: What makes The Harder They Come stand out in its depiction of Jamaica and its music scene?
Its combination of authentic local talent, the immersive reggae soundtrack, and on-location documentary-style footage creates a vivid, transportive portrait of Jamaica that helped introduce worldwide audiences to the music and culture.
