Longer-form cinema interviews diving into filmmaking craft including acting, directing, editing, composing and so much more. I grew up watching DVD features and I always wanted to create a show that can be similar to that idea of giving audiences an understanding of the hard work and dedication that goes into filmmaking.

  • Excellent Filmmaking Podcast

Kevin’s passion for the art of filmmaking is the driving force in curating this fantastic series. The interviews are far more complex and personal than the atypical podcast format usually leans toward - featuring meaningful conversations for any film enthusiast (or not). There are few critics in this industry who demonstrate a real understanding of the craft, or who even care to trifle with the foundation of Kevin’s perpetual curiosity. Bravo.

  • Excellent interviewer

If you love movies but more importantly love it when the interviewer genuinely loves the job, the industry, and can actively listen and ask just outstanding questions. This is the podcast. Seriously Kevin’s interview skills are masterful bc he listens and yet gets the person to tell us engaging answers. It’s a wonderful thing when you get this dynamic of active listener and engaged conversation. If you don’t already know Kevin reviews movies which are also fantastic.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Ep. 44 - Greig Fraser (Oscar-Winning Cinematographer) talks Project Hail Mary, Dune, The Batman, The Beatles, Cinematography, Lighting, Lenses, Matt Reeves, Movies, Cinema, IMAX 70mm, Film-Out Process
Q: Can you talk about the eight-pound rainbow filter and how such a small tool made a big impact on a huge production?
It was a creative, cost-effective solution that yielded distinctive rainbow flares and directionality. It showed that simple gear, used thoughtfully and in context with the scene, can define the look and motif of a large-scale film.
Ep. 44 - Greig Fraser (Oscar-Winning Cinematographer) talks Project Hail Mary, Dune, The Batman, The Beatles, Cinematography, Lighting, Lenses, Matt Reeves, Movies, Cinema, IMAX 70mm, Film-Out Process
Q: What was the Greig Pass and how did it affect the production on set?
The Greig Pass was a workflow where we would shoot with the intention of freeing up the shots after the main takes, allowing for more expressive lighting and performance, and it helped align the director's and DP's visions.
Ep. 44 - Greig Fraser (Oscar-Winning Cinematographer) talks Project Hail Mary, Dune, The Batman, The Beatles, Cinematography, Lighting, Lenses, Matt Reeves, Movies, Cinema, IMAX 70mm, Film-Out Process
Q: When did you first realize that the camera and lighting are inseparable from storytelling, not just decoration?
Early on I understood that cinematography is about serving the story; I trained myself by studying films and realizing that the image must push the narrative forward, not merely look virtuosic.
Ep. 46 - Finneas talks Beef Season 2, Score, The Social Network, Fincher, Lord of the Rings, Billie Eilish, Live Music, Favorite Movies, Albums, Reznor & Ross, Touring, Themes, Soundtrack, Oscar Isaac
Q: How do you balance writing a theme versus writing a song for a character?
You aim to leave space instrumentally for scenes, then craft melodies that can act as memorable callbacks for characters, ensuring the music supports the scene without overpowering dialogue.
Ep. 42 - Kevin Smith talks Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Jay and Silent Bob, Ben Affleck, Filmmaking, Soundtracks, Bill Pullman, Stan Lee, Tarantino, Legacy, Dogma, Red State, John Goodman, Tusk
Q: What made you decide to push forward with a monologue-driven ending in Red State after budget considerations changed the original plan?
I trusted the core emotional truth of the story and the character arcs, and I aimed to give the audience a meaningful, memorable moment that would still feel true to the film's intent, even if the ending had to be altered for budget. The monologue and the quieter final beats became the emotional fulcrum that carried the film's message.
