  • Best backpacking content now in a podcast!

I haven’t even listened to an episode yet and can say this is terrific. I’ve always enjoyed all things outdoors and I used Dixie’s YouTube as a source of information to start backpacking 6 years ago. Still sharing videos for people interested in backpacking trips or just learning how. So thankful and wishing this podcast the very best!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The Most Legendary Hiker: Nimblewill Nomad (M.J. Eberhart)
Q: Do you have an exercise regimen or a plan, and what is the trick to your mind and body staying capable in your 80s, 90s, and beyond?
The guest emphasizes the blend of consistent physical effort, mental discipline, and spiritual practice, noting that staying active and maintaining a positive mindset are essential; the mind and body support each other, making the physical challenges manageable.
The Most Legendary Hiker: Nimblewill Nomad (M.J. Eberhart)
Q: So how did you decide that you wanted to do that? How, why, what made you go to through-hike the Appalachian Trail at 83?
He describes a long, evolving decision process that began with revisiting his passion for distant trails, the realization that he could set a new age record, and choosing to pursue it despite initial hesitations, ultimately leading to a 262-day journey starting from Flagg Mountain rather than Springer.
Thru-hiking As A Family: Bekah Quirin
Q: How did the Great Divide trip compare to the AT in terms of difficulty and logistics?
The Great Divide felt more doable in terms of daily mileage and time, offering a sense of urgency and focus, whereas the AT required managing a heavier load and more variable terrain, yet both demanded disciplined pacing and multi-day planning.
Thru-hiking As A Family: Bekah Quirin
Q: What were the biggest logistical challenges in through-hiking with a baby?
Balancing weight and gear for ultralight comfort, arranging safe diaper solutions, sharing responsibilities in carrying Ellie, and adapting to the terrain with a small child, while keeping a flexible plan to avoid quitting on a bad day.
Thru-hiking As A Family: Bekah Quirin
Q: So how did the idea to hike the AT with Ellie come about?
The idea grew from a blend of ongoing outdoor habit, a postpartum period where thinking allowed lay time, and a moment of seeing through-hikers as a viable model; it evolved from conversation with Derek during maternity leave to a firm plan after planning and a shared dream.
