  • Incredible insight to nutrition and health

I love this podcast! The episode on diabetes was especially meaningful for me, as I have a son with type 1. The information was clear, well-researched, and very helpful. Even the episodes that aren't directly relevant to my life have been surprisingly interesting. The host does a great job at making complex nutrition facts easy to understand. Highly recommend for anyone wanting to learn more about their health!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Yes - specific foods can help prevent and treat constipation! ...with Professor Kevin Whelan
Q: What is the role of supplements like magnesium oxide compared to dietary fiber?
Supplements like magnesium oxide have consistent, robust evidence for improving constipation symptoms and stool frequency, acting by increasing water content in the bowel. However, they should be used under medical guidance, especially if there are kidney or heart conditions, and are best considered when dietary approaches are insufficient or as part of a clinician-guided plan.
Yes - specific foods can help prevent and treat constipation! ...with Professor Kevin Whelan
Q: From your research, do you recommend a specific set of foods or is it more about overall dietary patterns?
It's a pragmatic, multi-ingredient approach. While two kiwifruit per day is a clear, evidence-backed example, the advice is to combine various foods rich in soluble and viscous fibers (like psyllium), prunes, and a mix of fruits and vegetables to achieve a broad spectrum of fiber types and polyphenols. The goal is a healthy, diverse diet that naturally supports bowel health rather than a rigid prescription.
Should you drink plant 'milk'? ...with dietitian Isobel Harmer
Q: How has the plant-based milk market evolved in Australia and what drives consumer choice?
There has been a rapid expansion of plant-based milks across legumes, grains, and nuts, with a shift from soy dominating to more almond and oat milks; consumers are influenced by taste, environmental concerns, and fortification practices.
Are Ultra-Processed Foods (UPF) killing us? ... with A/Prof Phillip Baker
Q: What policy or labeling changes does the guest advocate for to help consumers make better choices?
The guest advocates for warning labels on unhealthy ultra-processed foods rather than relying on the health star rating system, which is co-designed with industry and may not account for ultra-processing. He also highlights tools like the Yuka app for barcode scanning to reveal additives and potential risks, and stresses the need to factor ultra-processing into labeling and public health policy to empower consumer choice.
Are Ultra-Processed Foods (UPF) killing us? ... with A/Prof Phillip Baker
Q: Which diseases are most clearly linked to higher consumption of ultra-processed foods, and what is the nature of that evidence?
Obesity and type 2 diabetes are the clearest disease links, with broader associations to coronary heart disease, stroke, inflammatory bowel diseases, kidney disease, mental health issues, and certain cancers. The evidence comes from observational data and epidemiology, and the Lancet Series argues for a causal relationship between higher ultra-processed food intake and adverse health outcomes, especially as UPF share in the diet increases.
