Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Writing Mr Ward’s map
Q: Kia ora, Elizabeth, that was so awesome. You mentioned children's stories. Did you find any particular stories of women perhaps working in the city beyond the prostitutes?
Yes, absolutely. There were many women running hotels and boarding houses, making hats and dresses, and a substantial number working as clerks with work rooms where women were employed. It was striking to see how many women owned or ran their own businesses, which added real depth to the stories behind the map.
The financial colonisation of Aotearoa
Q: Would Catherine like to speculate on what might have happened if the British government had not bailed out the New Zealand Company?
The bailout lent retrospective legitimacy to the company's actions, tying colonists materially to the company. Without it, there would likely have still been instability between settlers and Māori due to the reckless nature of the company's land dealings.
The financial colonisation of Aotearoa
Q: Can you talk more about the particular characteristics of the joint stock company and what made this form well suited to the organisation of the New Zealand Company compared to other vehicles?
The joint stock company model enabled capitalists to spread out their venture across a broad base of investors, allowing them to pull together more capital and pursue much bigger ventures. This was essential for the New Zealand Company to operate independently from government oversight.
The pain in Spain: Writing Spanish Civil War history in Aotearoa
Q: Do you have a favourite out of all of the work you've done?
Derby acknowledges that Doug Jolly is his favorite figure due to his remarkable qualities, but he finds satisfaction in all the projects he's worked on.
The pain in Spain: Writing Spanish Civil War history in Aotearoa
Q: What do you think are the resonances of this process of coming to terms with trauma for our own civil war?
Derby reflects on the similarities between the societal process of addressing past traumas in both the Spanish Civil War and New Zealand Wars, emphasizing that eventually, societies will have to confront their histories for healing to happen.
