Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Rolando Villazón: The Opera Star That Never Stops Evolving
Q: How did you learn that reinvention, that evolving can be a continuation of your identity?
He learned to accept mistakes as part of artistic work, step beyond the expectations created by fame, and be willing to face criticism. He says artists should pursue new work with conviction, adapt to their changing abilities and learn from valid criticism.
Rolando Villazón: The Opera Star That Never Stops Evolving
Q: Did you always dream of becoming an opera singer?
No. He discovered opera around age 20, after enjoying singing and creating characters as a child, and later encountered Plácido Domingo's voice. His central ambition was to become an artist and connect with audiences, not to become a superstar.
Yannick Nézet-Séguin: Vienna New Years Concert and Classical Music vs. AI
Q: What do you think classical music offers that nothing else really can? And what does classical music mean to you?
He says classical music provides calm and emotional nourishment, while opera and live orchestral performance bring people together through the human voice and musicians making music collectively. He sees that shared experience as a reminder of common humanity, in contrast with the divisiveness often encountered in news and online.
Yannick Nézet-Séguin: Vienna New Years Concert and Classical Music vs. AI
Q: What was that experience like for you?
Nézet-Séguin says conducting the Vienna New Year's Concert was a dream come true, but the three-year wait gave him ample time to become nervous. He studied the scores and focused on enjoying the performance; the audience's warm response made the concert exceed his expectations.
