Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Wendy Brown, "States of Injury: Power and Freedom in Late Modernity" (Princeton UP, 2025)
Q: In conflicts over race, gender, sexuality, minority rights, how can we honor histories of injury without being wedded to grievance, and what is the future of the left given these DEI battles and right-wing counter-mobilization?
The left should remain committed to equality and inclusion while expanding its language toward a planetary politics that protects both human and non-human life, moving beyond identitarian frames to cultivate solidarity and care. The aim is to sustain critique and social justice without letting co-optation derail emancipatory aims.
Wendy Brown, "States of Injury: Power and Freedom in Late Modernity" (Princeton UP, 2025)
Q: Another question is there are lots of conflict these days all over the world, even within democratic societies. Disinformation, migration, access to health, education. How can we recover practices of freedom without defaulting to bans and emergency powers, and reconstruct a democratic society?
Brown argues for distinguishing political freedom from merely private or market freedoms, emphasizing civic participation and the rule of the people. She cautions against using bans as a primary tool and suggests time-and-place discernment to counter co-optation and to maintain a viable space for critical inquiry and democratic deliberation.
Wendy Brown, "States of Injury: Power and Freedom in Late Modernity" (Princeton UP, 2025)
Q: Can you just before we start, can you just very briefly tell us how the idea of this book came to you back in 1995? Why you decided to write this book and it's obviously been republished again with a new preface. Why do you think it's still relevant?
Brown explains she started from an internal left critique of identity politics and its fixation on injury, aiming to ground emancipation in a broader, more inclusive political project. The republishing underscores the continued currency of the issues, including debates over wounded attachments and the critique of left legalism, while acknowledging the evolution of these debates into current right-leaning critiques.
Maud Anne Bracke, "Reproductive Rights in Modern France: Reproductive Rights in Modern France: Feminism, Contraception, and Abortion, 1950-1980 (Oxford UP, 2025)
Q: How did the role of the MLF influence the expansion of reproductive liberty and what were some limitations you identify?
The MLF pushed the abortion debate into public and political spheres, foregrounding women's bodily autonomy and self-determination, which helped shift policy and discourse by the mid-1970s. However, the movement had limitations, notably limited focus on overseas departments and a tendency toward White Majority Feminism, which meant immigrant women and racialized groups did not always see their experiences reflected or addressed in the broader feminist agenda.
Understanding Iran Under Attack: A Discussion with Author Vali Nasr
Q: What can you tell us about the leadership and the new Supreme Leader's role during this period?
Nasr discusses the importance of the Supreme Leader, the guarded public profile of the new leader, his revolutionary Guard background, and why the assembly chose him as the most effective during wartime, given the need for steadfast leadership and continuity.
