Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Mayu Fujikawa, "Envisioning Diplomacy: Japanese Ambassadors in Early Modern Europe" (Pennsylvania State UP, 2025)
Q: Could you explain more about the concept of 'ambassadors of obedience' and its significance during the Tensho Embassy?
The ambassadors represented their Catholic samurai lords to the Pope, showcasing recognition of the Pope's authority. This allowed the Pope to depict them as figures of obedience, influencing the portrayal of the embassy in art.
Mayu Fujikawa, "Envisioning Diplomacy: Japanese Ambassadors in Early Modern Europe" (Pennsylvania State UP, 2025)
Q: Could you start us off by introducing yourself a little bit, and tell us why you decided to write this book?
I'm Mayu Fujikawa, and I'm an art historian focused on Italian Renaissance art. I began exploring the Keijo embassy almost three decades ago after reading about it, which led me to write this book to analyze the impact of these Japanese embassies in Europe.
Kwame Nkrumah and Pan-Africanism’s High Tide: A Conversation with Howard W. French
Q: What does 'The Second Emancipation' mean and why now?
Howard explains that the book discusses how the formal end of slavery did not lead to true emancipation, as rights were not granted, paralleling this with the larger narrative of Pan-Africanism.
Kwame Nkrumah and Pan-Africanism’s High Tide: A Conversation with Howard W. French
Q: Can you tell us a bit more about your background and how you became interested in journalism?
Howard shares that his interest in journalism was accidental, growing from his early experiences in an African-American family and later connecting to Africa through visits to his parents in Ivory Coast.
Maddalena Alvi, "The European Art Market and the First World War: Art, Capital, and the Decline of the Collecting Class, 1910–1925" (Cambridge UP, 2025)
Q: How does the collecting class change in France and Britain during the First World War?
In France, the collecting class is eroded due to the impact of war and the exclusion of foreign dealers, while in Britain, the market remains solid, and financialization leads to monetizing art assets.
