This is a wonderful podcast show and John is just awesome! -Rachael Bell
Love hearing his stories!
Most of my understanding of detectives came from the tinsel world of TV series, and movies, or the 5 second soundbites served with the evening news. John is an excellent interviewer and opens a door into the human dimensiion of the detective's world. John's questions are spot-on and he keeps the dialog fresh and interesting. This will be a regular listen.
Interesting interviews with accomplished detectives who describe their cases and indentify the skills they use to crack them. Interviewer John Hoda draws on his distinguised career as a fraud and crime investigater to ask these super sleuths exactly the right questions..."Just the facts ma’am (or man)!" John personally helped me with a case my family was involved in. None better!
I've been obsessed with a variety of true crime TV shows (the most recent being The Staircase) and when John told me he was launching a podcast I got excited. Love it so far, looking forward to seeing how it develops and evolves. Terrific guests, great conversations. Full disclosure, I know John personally and think what he's doing is awesome.
Great stories about the investigation process, whether you’re considering a career in the field or just interested in true crime!
Up until now my favorite detective was Nancy Drew.......Thank you for drawing me into this new, and REAL, detective world. The podcasts are lively, humorous, and extremely well executed. I look forward to being a reguar listener!
I've know John for a while, and this podcast shows the same care and personal input that I'm sure he has put into his professional career as an investigator. Great listening!
In the podcast John Hoda asks what motivates one to become a PI. He asks about the traits that have enabled them to succeed. There are many similar qualities cited by his first three guests including passion, curiosity, attention to detail, perseverance, uncompromised ethical standards, cooperation with others, common sense, devotion and a good heart. Hoda helps us see the skills of one of his guests, Cynthia Hetherington, that lead her from a career as a librarian to that of a PI. The sincerity... more
I was very impressed with the interview John Honda had today with Pat McGaha. I learned a lot about what it is like to be a cop and detective, including the skills required, many challenges, and demands of the jobs. I especially enjoyed the interesting stories Pat shared, especially the last one when he was a rookie cop. The ending was a real surprise! I look forward to listening to more podcasts and will share the link with family and friends. Great job, John, and thank you!
My understanding of what a detective does has been limited to what I've gleaned from TV and movies. I learned in this podcast, however, that isn't accurate. The approach and work of a real detective is very different. You will learn about that in this episode of My Favorite Detective Stories. Hoda's interview of Ken Mains, a real-life detective, reveals what it is truly like. They talk about the process, the passion and drive necessary to be excellent, as well as the risks sometimes involve... more
