  • My go to

I'd probably benefit from finding an in person meeting but I've not had such luck. This podcast has been so helpful to me and I am very grateful. I've played them from the beginning since 2021 and I'm 93 meetings in. It's great to hear all the valuable wisdom from the same parents over time. The Q&A's with the therapists in between is some of the best guidance you could ever find and it's free! This podcast has guided me and helped me to be a better parent. I've even listened to it on my way to ... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Podcast XTRA: Q&A with Dr Steven Klein
Q: How do you address fear of relapse among families, and what hopeful guidance can you offer?
Relapse is a real concern but not the end of recovery; recovery is a journey, and relapse can surface issues that were previously unaddressed, potentially leading to deeper progress if managed with ongoing support and compassionate care.
Podcast XTRA: Q&A with Dr Steven Klein
Q: What role do genetics and epigenetics play in substance-use disorders and mental illness, and how should families interpret this information?
Genetics contribute to predisposition but are not deterministic; there is no single 'addiction gene' and environment interacts with biology. Epigenetics adds a layer showing how stress and experiences can be inherited across generations, influencing vulnerability and resilience.
Podcast XTRA: Q&A with Dr Steven Klein
Q: What is your general approach to treating adolescents differently from adults at Caron Treatment Centers?
The approach emphasizes compassion, listening more than talking, meeting young people where they are, and focusing on achievable, day-to-day coping skills rather than promising a lifetime of abstinence, acknowledging adolescent brain development and social dynamics.
Podcast XTRA: Q&A with Dr Steven Klein
Q: How does artificial intelligence function as a tool in treating mental health conditions and addiction, and what are its limitations?
AI is a tool, not a direct treatment; it can make care more efficient by supporting documentation and facilitating conversations, for example through ambient listening that records and writes notes in the background, thereby preserving the therapeutic doctor-patient relationship while reducing administrative burden.
Podcast XTRA: Q&A with Dr Steven Klein
Q: Dr. Klein, can you explain how GLP-1 weight loss medications are being used for addiction treatment and how effective they appear to be?
There is mounting evidence that these medications are highly efficacious in treating addiction, with retrospective data showing a reduction in various substance use diagnoses and decreases in all-cause mortality, and prospective studies suggesting meaningful reductions in alcohol use; the data point toward a potential reframe of obesity as an addiction to food and a new wave of addiction treatment.
