  • Thankful

It’s been so difficult to find support and hope for myself through my teenage stepdaughter’s journey with substance abuse. This has been helpful, centering, and a warm hug. Thank you for recording this and thank you to the parents who are participating!

  • My go to

I'd probably benefit from finding an in person meeting but I've not had such luck. This podcast has been so helpful to me and I am very grateful. The Q&A's with the therapists in between is some of the best guidance you could ever find and it's free! This podcast has guided me and helped me to be a better parent. I've even listened to it on my way to ... more

Podcast XTRA: Q&A with Kate Appleman
Q: This Alcoholic Anonymous 12-Step Program no longer the preferred approach in treatment these days?
No, 12-step mutual supports remain a valuable component for many, but treatment should be tailored to individual needs and may incorporate other approaches like Smart Recovery or Dharma Recovery when appropriate.
Podcast XTRA: Q&A with Cory Trevena
Q: Is it ever really done, or will there always be a lasting impact from a child's recovery process?
There is always a lasting impact, but families often show post-traumatic growth, becoming stronger through their experiences.
Podcast XTRA: Q&A with Cory Trevena
Q: What role do you think a psychologist plays in this process?
Psychologists manage complex cases and provide evidence-based techniques, complementing other therapy roles within a multi-tiered approach.
Podcast XTRA: Q&A with Cory Trevena
Q: What can I do to show my child that I want to be supportive of their efforts?
Listen and give your child space to make mistakes without trying to control their actions, which supports their independence.
Podcast XTRA: Q&A with Cory Trevena
Q: Are there ways to address that painful sense of inadequacy and guilt and failure?
We need to remember the three Cs: I didn't cause it, I can't cure it, and I can't control it. Parents often feel they have failed, but it's important to understand that addiction is a disease and not the parent's fault.
