  • Thank you Muddy Boots

I've been listening to Muddy Boots since last year. I live in Canterbury New Zealand and have found it tricky to source podcasts that give in detailed information about gardening that isn't boring or overwhelming. Listening to Keith speak from knowledge and experience is wonderful. He's not snobby in his answers but keeps it understandable and empathetic! Elizabeth asks some brilliant questions and has helped me value the importance of flowers. I've learned so much from listening to these two an... more

Muddy Boots Special Guest: Petrina Blooms
Q: For listeners dreaming of turning their passion into a business, any tips to get started?
Start really small and local, begin with friends and family, and offer to supply a local business or event to prove your concept. Build word-of-mouth referrals by doing what you love and staying true to your style, which will attract the right clients.
Question Time 49!
Q: How do I deal with pests affecting a Crepe Myrtle and rosemary at the base of the tree?
Check for infestations such as spider mites, two-spotted mites, aphids; use neem oil or eco oil and consider systemic treatments like Econeme where appropriate, along with cultural practices to manage soil and plant health.
Question Time 49!
Q: What should I do about a crepe myrtle natchez with a cut main trunk—will it affect its form?
Isolate one of the growth points to maintain a single trunk while pruning over time to shape, and consider winter pruning to promote a controlled form without damaging overall structure.
Question Time 49!
Q: Resting the soil after a crop and compost—do microbes die without food, and is tilling harmful?
Microbes die if deprived of food, and tilling brings them to the surface where they are exposed; resting soil after removing crops and adding compost is beneficial, with the hosts recommending rest periods and adding compost and humates for microbial support.
Question Time 49!
Q: I removed a number of athel trees some time ago, but I'm still having trouble growing anything within 10 to 20 meters. How can I fix contaminated soil?
The panel explains that the soil needs to be enriched with organic matter and beneficial microbes; plant legumes like beans or peas to fix nitrogen, then turn them into the soil before they flower, followed by applying products like Populate and BioStim to boost microbial life and soil health.
