  • Thank you Muddy Boots

I've been listening to Muddy Boots since last year. I live in Canterbury New Zealand and have found it tricky to source podcasts that give in detailed information about gardening that isn't boring or overwhelming. Listening to Keith speak from knowledge and experience is wonderful. He's not snobby in his answers but keeps it understandable and empathetic! Elizabeth asks some brilliant questions and has helped me value the importance of flowers. I've learned so much from listening to these two an... more

Question Time 47!
Q: How do I manage suckers on a fig tree and stop them from coming back each year?
Use Firehawk to kill suckers (as it's a contact herbicide), and for ongoing control you can cut down to ground level with a brush cutter if necessary, ensuring you destroy the cell structure of the suckers.
Question Time 47!
Q: What size branch is acceptable for summer pruning on peaches, and is summer pruning a good idea?
Summer pruning is beneficial; cut back roughly half the tree to a manageable height, then allow the other half to regrow, which will bear next year's fruit as it replenishes growth.
Question Time 47!
Q: How long will crepe myrtles take to flower from new plantings, and what's the best pruning approach for older plants?
Older crepe myrtles should be pruned to remove or reduce regrowth from the tops, focusing on encouraging new, well-spaced growth that will flower in the following year, and avoiding over-pruning that can slow flowering.
Question Time 47!
Q: I was hoping you could provide some advice about crepe myrtle pruning.
Prune the regrowth back to roughly 25–50 mm from the big top branch cut, so you encourage strong, outward-growing new shoots that will flower well next season.
Question Time 46!
Q: What best fertiliser to use for maximum growth of a fig tree?
Use a fertilizer with a high nitrogen component for growth, preferably in liquid form, like Amgro Nitrosol.
