  • Refreshingly respectful

I love that Craig and Ollie disagree on points, but they do so with the utmost respect for each other’s perspective and expertise, and as a result they achieve a consensus. Many non-teachers would do well to listen and learn from the excellent model for how to debate. The episodes are always thought-provoking and make me wish I had more time to plan my lessons from scratch again!

  • Love this podcast!

Although my allegiance as an Australian does lie with Craig’s rival, Ollie Lovell, I would not miss an episode of Mr Barton, especially when he says, ‘flippin heck.’ Craig always asks the questions that we are sometimes a bit shy to ask for fear of looking foolish. Does anyone else bop along to the theme tune and try and time the ‘hellooooo and welcome’ with Craig’s? This podcast is practical and you feel smarter at the end. Five stars Mr Barton.

  • A must for any maths teacher.

Recently I had been feeling very uninspired after 8 years of teaching and was considering leaving the profession. Almost all professional development provided by my school was of a very low quality and didn’t improving my teaching. I felt like I was actively getting worse at the job and had lost my passion for it. Listening to this podcast on the way to work has reinvigorated me, gave me great practical advice and allowed me to love teaching again.

#218 AI in Education with Carl Hendrick
Q: What are the practical apps students are using, and are these static or generative?
There is an app stack with spaced repetition and predictive models that adapt to the student's current performance, not just the last result. The content combines instructional sequences with checks for understanding, drawing on examples, vocabulary, and morphology.
#218 AI in Education with Carl Hendrick
Q: Would you be able to give listeners a background on Alpha School and what they do?
Alpha School is two hours of app-based learning in the morning with goals and monitoring, followed by traditional activities. The system uses AI coaching, data tracking like time on task and latency, and aims to scale direct instruction and retrieval practice while keeping teachers involved for metacognitive support.
#215 AI in Education with Daisy Christodoulou
Q: What role do you see AI playing in professional development for teachers?
AI can accelerate learning for teachers if used thoughtfully, especially for diagnostic questioning and feedback; however, it should complement rather than replace structured professional development and the mentorship role of experienced educators.
#215 AI in Education with Daisy Christodoulou
Q: Let me ask you just one more thing about this assessment. Can we just remove the human? Are we at the stage where with your comparative judgment model, the human is bringing results down?
There should always be some human in the loop; while AI can reduce error and speed up processing, keeping a human in the loop helps guard against second-order consequences, bias, and misinterpretation, and it can even improve outcomes by catching human errors that the AI might miss.
#214 Research in Action 31: Early Years Financial Literacy with Iro Xenidou-Dervou
Q: What are the five core components of early financial literacy identified in Arlo's Adventures?
The five components are transaction methods, getting money and making money decisions, saving money, where money comes from, and spending money; together they form a framework to assess early financial literacy without requiring arithmetic.
