  • Refreshingly respectful

I love that Craig and Ollie disagree on points, but they do so with the utmost respect for each other’s perspective and expertise, and as a result they achieve a consensus. Many non-teachers would do well to listen and learn from the excellent model for how to debate. The episodes are always thought-provoking and make me wish I had more time to plan my lessons from scratch again!

  • Love this podcast!

Although my allegiance as an Australian does lie with Craig’s rival, Ollie Lovell, I would not miss an episode of Mr Barton, especially when he says, ‘flippin heck.’ Craig always asks the questions that we are sometimes a bit shy to ask for fear of looking foolish. Does anyone else bop along to the theme tune and try and time the ‘hellooooo and welcome’ with Craig’s? This podcast is practical and you feel smarter at the end. Five stars Mr Barton.

  • A must for any maths teacher.

Recently I had been feeling very uninspired after 8 years of teaching and was considering leaving the profession. Almost all professional development provided by my school was of a very low quality and didn’t improving my teaching. I felt like I was actively getting worse at the job and had lost my passion for it. Listening to this podcast on the way to work has reinvigorated me, gave me great practical advice and allowed me to love teaching again.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

#223 What do 10,000 teachers think about AI?
Q: What is your take on the 58% of secondary teachers who suspect a student cheated with AI?
It likely underestimates the true extent of cheating because AI has become highly capable at hiding its outputs, and high-stakes contexts push students toward using AI, while teachers struggle to recognize it in some cases.
#221 Building an AI tutor with Google DeepMind with Bibi Groot (Eedi’s Chief Impact Officer)
Q: What were the headline findings from the Google DeepMind collaboration with Eedi?
The AI tutor delivered engagement and learning gains comparable to, and in some aspects exceeding, a human tutor, with high retry success rates and improved transfer on subsequent questions; importantly, AI tutoring achieved gains without increasing safeguarding risks and benefited from a structured, constrained design.
#222 AI in Education with Becky Allen
Q: So what have you seen that's impressive from a learning perspective that AI can do right now, as opposed to theoretical promises?
Becky explains that current impressive uses include activating prior knowledge through open-ended prompts, guiding worked examples in small steps, and creating adaptive, formative tasks that resemble a one-to-one tutoring approach, particularly in mathematics and science. She emphasizes that context and interaction quality matter, and that AI-enabled tools can drive productive, student-centric dialogue in ways traditional static tasks cannot.
#218 AI in Education with Carl Hendrick
Q: What are the practical apps students are using, and are these static or generative?
There is an app stack with spaced repetition and predictive models that adapt to the student's current performance, not just the last result. The content combines instructional sequences with checks for understanding, drawing on examples, vocabulary, and morphology.
#218 AI in Education with Carl Hendrick
Q: Would you be able to give listeners a background on Alpha School and what they do?
Alpha School is two hours of app-based learning in the morning with goals and monitoring, followed by traditional activities. The system uses AI coaching, data tracking like time on task and latency, and aims to scale direct instruction and retrieval practice while keeping teachers involved for metacognitive support.
