  • Amazing guests & info, but audio quality is poor

While the guests are top of their fields and given the chance the speak extensively, the audio is so poor that it makes it hard to stay engaged and to listen to. Please upgrade the audio quality! All it takes is a few good mics…

  • Very informative, but…

The audio quality is terrible. Dean sounds like he is in a room with no sound absorptive surfaces. Makes it difficult to listen to.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Mostly Economics Podcast #34: Another Lie, Another War with Matt Duss
Q: What do you think is a realistic path forward to move away from escalation?
A path forward would require credible US pressure on Israel to restrain actions, renewed diplomacy with Iran and regional actors, and leveraging regional players like Oman and Qatar to facilitate talks, rather than continuing military campaigns that fragment trust.
Mostly Economics Podcast #34: Another Lie, Another War with Matt Duss
Q: What are the main reasons the war got underway despite these assessments?
hawks pressed a broader agenda and hoped to topple the regime through military action, while some policymakers believed pressuring Iran would prevent a weaponization, but in practice the war worsened the regional security situation and eroded diplomacy.
Mostly Economics Podcast #34: Another Lie, Another War with Matt Duss
Q: So you tell us what your assessment is, presumably they weren't about to get one, but whatever. Where do you think their nuclear program stood?
The Iran nuclear program had not made a political decision to pursue a weapon; the NIE and subsequent assessments suggested activity but not an active bid to weaponize, and the JCPOA offered verification that could constrain activities while providing relief, which Trump abandoned.
Mostly Economics Podcast #32: How the War on Iran is Shaping the US Economy with Claudia Sahm
Q: What do you see for the economy in the optimistic scenario if there is a quick resolution?
Even in a swift resolution, energy prices may spike temporarily but should ease over time; the broader economy is likely to muddle through with inflation easing as supply shocks unwind, though consumption may slow due to higher energy costs.
Mostly Economics Podcast #33: Nexstar-Tegna Merger and Media Partisanship with Milo Vassallo
Q: How has regulatory handling by figures like Brendan Carr influenced these mergers?
Carr's approach is portrayed as undermining traditional due process and enabling rapid, opaque decisions that push mergers forward, often without full commission consensus, which weakens accountability and allows political considerations to override public interest.
