Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

STARZPLAY CEO Maaz Sheikh: "We Do Local Content Better Than Netflix"
Q: What's your take on competition and the future of content creation with AI?
Localization is key; Starzplay's focus on the MENA market and local payment methods gives it an edge over generic global platforms. AI will transform content creation, including AI-generated Arabic animation and lip-syncing for different dialects, which will reshape the value chain and production costs, while still requiring QA to maintain quality, especially for Arabic language content.
STARZPLAY CEO Maaz Sheikh: "We Do Local Content Better Than Netflix"
Q: What were the early pivots that helped you scale, and how did you balance growth with cash flow?
The first major pivot was solving online payments by partnering with mobile operators, which built trust and enabled sign-ups via mobile. Later pivoting to Arabic and Khaleeji content, along with a gradual embrace of original programming, helped leverage data to reduce risk. Cash flow challenges were mitigated by partnering with telcos and large brands, avoiding heavy direct-to-consumer acquisition costs and keeping a balanced spend between licensing and originals.
STARZPLAY CEO Maaz Sheikh: "We Do Local Content Better Than Netflix"
Q: Maaz, can you take us to the very beginning? What inspired you to start Starzplay?
There was no single aha moment; it was a culmination of a few things, including being at a life stage where I felt time was running out and wanting to build something meaningful. My co-founder and I would discuss ideas at lunch, and the concept that stuck with us was addressing the shifting consumption from linear TV to on-demand in the region, while also filling the gap between free Arabic content and expensive premium options.
The Girl Who Made Burkinis Cool: "You Have to Be a Little Crazy to Make It" | Hadia Ghaleb
Q: What's the core rationale behind bootstrapping and owning 100% of the company?
Bootstrapping ensured I could control the vision and avoid selling out to institutions. By reinvesting profits and maintaining ownership, I preserved the brand's long-term strategic flexibility and clarity of mission.
The Girl Who Made Burkinis Cool: "You Have to Be a Little Crazy to Make It" | Hadia Ghaleb
Q: How did you turn personal adversity and online bullying into a business advantage?
I treated every interaction, including negative ones, as data to measure impact. By documenting results and proving value to brands, I transformed the narrative from victim to a scalable, monetizable influencer engine.
