It’s easy to see a child’s education as a path determined by grades, test scores and extra curricular activities. But genuine learning is about so much more than the points schools tally. MindShift explores the future of learning and how we raise our kids. This podcast is part of the MindShift education site, a division of KQED News. • Talking to Adults ep.

Loved this one and see its applications for all K-12 students (I’m a high school theatre teacher). Great work reporting on a program like this, per usual!

  • Phonemic Awareness Episode

There was some great information in here around phonemic awareness especially around blending and segmenting. However I keep hearing missteps in episodes like this. Reading recovery DOES include phonemic awareness and phonics. Reading recovery teachers are highly skilled intervention teachers who meet students where they are and then take them beyond and the above skills are a part of that. On the topic of balanced literacy: there are multiple aspects to this, hence it being called balanced. Pho... more

  • Professor full of empty air

    Study strategies lecture

Professor typified the empty chatter of US colleges.

The tragedy is students in the USA pay a ransom to be a captive audience to them—and the professor gets a pay check.

I remember from the first day till decades later when we sat in the beginning of a University lecture was like a train starting — stop the conversation and jump on.

There are too many great books to read rather than listening to this.

  • Yay for New Season!

Great first episode back. The awareness being made surrounding assessments is crucial and something that must always be scrutinized and re-evaluated.

  • Not ED Safe

In the data science episode students keep track of “unhealthy snacks”. The creators should look into how troubling judgement of food is and how easily eating disorders start for students. I can’t listen to this podcast because of the rare but sure bits of anti-fat bias. You should research “what we all know” about health.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Ross Greene: What if Bad Behavior Isn’t the Problem?
Q: Can you tell us more about what you describe as concerning behavior?
Concerning behavior signals that a student is frustrated or distressed about meeting an expectation, and the real work is identifying which unsolved problems underlie those behaviors.
Scott R. Levy: How School Boards Can Strengthen Our Democracy
Q: Can you explain some of the historical significance of this loss of power and where the power that school boards used to hold has now been delegated to?
Historically, school boards handled all aspects of education; now, power has shifted to state governments and, to an extent, the federal government for equity concerns.
Scott R. Levy: How School Boards Can Strengthen Our Democracy
Q: You state in the introduction of your book that school boards are the vital organ for education decision making. Why do you think that there seems to be this broad lack of awareness or misunderstanding about how a school board might serve the public?
Many board meetings are routine and perceived as boring; increased awareness followed the COVID-19 pandemic and contentious issues brought attention to them.
Scott R. Levy: How School Boards Can Strengthen Our Democracy
Q: Can you give me a brief and basic explanation of the configuration and function of a school board?
The board is a governance body meant to oversee budget allocation and think about policy, not to handle the day-to-day running of schools.
Financial Literacy in The Digital Age With Lillian Zhang
Q: How do you know who to trust, who to follow, whose advice to apply to your own financial life?
It's important to use analytical thinking and remember that everyone's financial situation is different. Look for relatable journeys and be wary of quick-profit schemes.
