Reviews

4.5 out of 5 stars from 80 ratings
  • Informative and extremely relevant

Chain Reaction is a fantastic podcast. I would suggest it to anyone interested in geopolitics and/or war, and even if you’re not. The issues that are discussed are very timely. The guests are all experts in their field and opinions are as apolitical as possible in this day and age. Check it out if you haven’t already!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Intelligence, Strategy, and the Reality of Modern Conflict
Q: What do policymakers need to be asking today that they aren't paying enough attention to?
Policymakers should demand a holistic view of potential conflicts, preparing for a full spectrum of warfare (conventional, irregular, and political) and recognizing that deterrence, resilience, and long-term commitments are needed for sustained peace; the interviewee emphasizes the need to maintain both hard and soft power capabilities and avoid the short-war fallacy.
Understanding Germany's Defense Strategy
Q: How will Germany pay for these defense ambitions and how will public opinion respond to the reforms?
Funding is planned to increase substantially over the next several years, paired with a lessons-learned process and public outreach to explain the necessity, aiming to secure broader societal buy-in and political support.
Understanding Germany's Defense Strategy
Q: What does the German defense strategy actually say and what does it mean for Germany's future defense posture?
The strategy embeds Germany's security approach in a formal framework, prioritizes defending the country and NATO territory, and seeks closer burden sharing with partners, while also urging refurbished armed forces and a robust armaments industry.
Cyber is War
Q: What are the key steps you would recommend to deter China while avoiding a direct confrontation, given your three-for-three track record on predictions?
Reinforce military deterrence with credible readiness in the region, harden supply chains and technology bases (semiconductors, rare earths), pursue smart, targeted economic measures, and maintain strategic ambiguity where appropriate while signaling that the U.S. would defend Taiwan if necessary.
Cyber is War
Q: Before we jump into the questions, how did you get here and what do you do?
I have a background in cybersecurity and international affairs, co-founded CrowdStrike, and now run Silverado Policy Accelerator, which blends geopolitics with tech policy to understand how great-power competition plays out in cyberspace and beyond.
